Add-on certification must be added to a valid Louisiana teaching certificate.

Additional Louisiana State Department of Education Certification Requirements:

  • If you are pursuing Mild/Moderate 4-8 and do not already have a Middle School (4-8) Certification, you will need to pass the Praxis Middle School Content Exam and the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) 5-9 exam
  • If you are pursuing Mild/Moderate 6-12 and do not already have a Secondary (6-12) Certification, you will need to pass the Praxis Secondary Content Exam and the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) 7-12 exam
  • A passing score on the Praxis Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications
  • Please verify that you meet the state teaching of reading and literacy requirements

Upon completing all requirements, the teacher's district will send an Evaluation, Add-On, Course Approval & Name Change Application (Application Type - EV) and any other documents (e.g., transcripts) to the Louisiana State Department of Education to add the new area to the existing teaching certification.
