My expertise is in creative writing. I write and teach fiction with an emphasis on literary short stories although I occasionally teach a novel-writing class as well as other special-topic writing classes. My favorite contemporary writers include Alice Munroe, Bobbie Ann Mason, Eudora Welty, William Faulkner, Flannery O’Connor, Ron Rash, Elizabeth Strout, V.S. Naipaul, Ha Jin, Cormac McCarthy, Jumpa Lahiri, Tennessee Williams, Reynolds Price, and many more.

In my own writing my emphasis is on Southern culture, the family, the land, and our relationships with each other and ourselves during crucial times in our lives. Writing about the choices and decisions my characters make during the conflicts and crossroads of their lives helps me to achieve a better understanding of what it means to be a sentient human being in a chaotic world. Through reading and writing we learn about ourselves and all of the people who share our lives.

My other great pleasures are meeting other authors speaking to book clubs and writers groups, attending festivals and conferences, and most importantly teaching gifted writers. I am the co-founder of the St. Tammany Writers Group, founder of Southeastern’s Creative Writing Group which has morphed to be called the La Literati Writing Group, and I am a board member of the Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in the French Quarter in New Orleans.
