    Learn a Foreign Language

    The Languages side of the department offers a major in Spanish and Spanish Education. Faculty members teach not only Spanish but German, French, Italian and Latin.

    The Southeastern Channel broadcasts to four parishes over Charter Cable and has an extensive programming schedule created by the students. 90.9 KSLU radio has won the Louisiana Association of Broadcaster's Station of the Year award along with multiple statues for programming and advertising.

    We offer a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with concentration in Spanish Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with emphases in Broadcasting, Journalism and Speech, as well as a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication.

Languages and Communication

Our Communication and Foreign language degree programs feature interdisciplinary, experiential curricula that prepare our majors and minors for careers to meet today's workforce demands.

Our communication students receive educational opportunities in a wide range of areas, including speech fundamentals and interpersonal communication, media writing, production and direction, organizational communication, public relations, and all forms of internet and digital communication. Language students can learn Spanish, French, German, Italian and Latin. Students can go on to develop their fluency with our wide range of courses including: grammar, phonetics, translation, service-learning, literature, cultural studies, conversation and foreign language teaching methodology. Additionally, we have specialized courses such as: Spanish Medical Translation, Spanish for Business, and Spanish for Law Enforcement which can be offered in any language! And all students have access to state-of-the-art broadcast facilities in radio and television and language learning software and conversational partners.

 

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
  • Our communications students compete in the Southeast Journalism Conference every year winning in categories ranging from News Writing to Journalistic Ethics to Broadcast Performance. In 2013, Southeastern's Communication students won the championship.

  • The Languages and Communication Department boasts award winning faculty and many endowed professorships. The faculty have also won numerous President's Awards for teaching, research and service.

  • The Southeastern Channel television station was named Best in the Nation out of 856 entries at the College Broadcasters, Inc. 2017 National Student Production Awards presented at the annual National Student Electronic Media Convention in San Antonio.

  • The department hosts International Night, a celebration of our international students on campus. The annual event includes an international buffet and an international show featuring our international and foreign language students.

  • Students come from all over the world and from various parts of the countries come to Southeastern specifically to study a foreign language. Every class overs an excellent multicultural, multilingual, and multi-dialect experience along with experienced faculty originally from Mexico, Italy, Poland, Venezuela, Columbia, and various states within the United States, including Louisiana.
