Academic Advising

All Nursing majors have an assigned nursing faculty member who will remain their advisor for the duration of the program.  Students are encouraged to meet and establish a relationship with their assigned advisor.  The School of Nursing has faculty advisors based in Hammond as well as the Baton Rouge Center.  Assigned advisors will contact their advisees via email before the priority registration period each semester.

Students must be advised each semester to have their registration hold removed.  Approximately one month prior to registration each semester, an e-mail is sent to all nursing majors with instructions for class scheduling.  It is highly recommended that students use the online advising system (see instructions below) in Leonet.  If a student does not yet have an assigned advisor they can call the Hammond Nursing Office (985-549-2156) to be assigned a faculty advisor.

TRANSFER students must receive initial advising by the transfer student advisor, Dr. Blake Smith. Call the nursing office at 985.549.2156 to request a link to his calendar, or email him at jeffie.smith@southeastern.edu once transcripts have been evaluated and posted in Southeastern's system.

Instructions for using the on-line advising system

Log into LeoNet for Students, then go to Self-Service, Student Services, and Online Advising.

You MUST chose your assigned advisor from the drop down.

If you list any courses that are not directly in your curriculum, please explain why in the student comment box.  Otherwise, there is a chance your advisor will not approve your request.  Use the comment box to ask questions also.  Check your catalog to make sure you have met the prerequisites to take the classes you list.

You should allow 48 hours for approval and should not, therefore, wait until your assigned day of registration to complete on-line advising.  You may want to email your advisor and let them know that you have used the system so they will know to check.

You will receive an email when your advisor has responded.  If they have approved your request, your "hold" will be removed.

If your advisor disapproves the courses listed you will need to see your advisor in person or speak to him/her by phone since you are only allowed to use the system once and cannot make changes once the course list is submitted.  Once your advising hold is removed you still may not register until your appointment time (set by Enrollment Services).

GPA Estimation Tool

** The GPA Estimation Tool is offered to help calculate your cumulative GPA on the courses required prior to enrolling in nursing coursework.  This is a tool only, and is intended for your use to help facilitate decisions about progression.  It should not be considered "official."  Please consult with your advisor for any questions or concerns about your cumulative GPA on required degree pre-requisite courses.
