9th Ward Field Trip

SOC 360 and 455 9th Ward Field Trip

On Monday, March 28th, Dr. David Burley’s Environmental Sociology class (SOC 360) and Dr. Anna Kleiner's Urban Sociology (SOC 455) class got a first-hand look at the environmental sustainability projects taking place in the 9th Ward and Holy Cross neighborhoods in New Orleans. Their tour guide was community organizer for the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association and environmental justice coordinator for the Sierra Club, Darryl Malek-Wiley. They toured the LEED certified homes being built by Global Green, an organization that has hosted our sociology interns. The students also observed the restoration efforts of Bayou Bienvenue and its importance to the sustainability of the community. While students did not get to meet Brad Pitt, they did observe the homes and playground being built by Mr. Pitt's Make It Right foundation. Finally, they visited an urban agriculture school for local at-risk youth, Our School at Blair Grocery, where founder Nat Turner discussed issues of food justice, food security and growing sustainably produced food for the community as a form of community building, youth empowerment, and job creation. All the while, students dug in the dirt and got to bring home deeply delicious greens that they harvested themselves! This tour takes place every semester for the classes of Burley and Kleiner.
