Teaching and Learning Graduate Degree Programs

MED

Master of Education (MED) programs are designed for graduate students who already have certification. 

The Department of Teaching & Learning offers two MED options with several concentration areas available for each option. You do not need to have prior certification in special education to enroll in the MED in Special Education.

Admission to an MED programs from the Department of Teaching & Learning requires

  • Meeting the University-wide graduate program requirements for GPA.
  • Having a valid teaching certificate.

MED in Curriculum and Instruction  

The mission of the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction program is to provide a quality program through which certified teacher candidates demonstrate the advanced knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to have a positive impact on student achievement in grades PK-12.

MED in Special Education

The mission of the Master of Education in Special Education program is to provide a quality program through which graduate teacher candidates demonstrate the advanced knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to have a positive impact on students with disabilities from birth to age 22.

MAT 

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs are designed for graduate students who have never had a full teaching certification, but who desire to both earn a master's degree and obtain their teaching certification. 

  • Admission to the MAT program requires
    • Meeting the University-wide graduate program requirements for GPA.
    • Passing score(s) for the Praxis Content exam(s) in the area for certification.
    • A successful interview and writing submission with the Graduate Coordinator.
  • Other state required Praxis exams will be taken during program completion. Please see the Louisiana State Department of Education website or the Praxis website for current test numbers and passing scores.
  • MAT students who have completed at least 6-credit hours of coursework are eligible for the Practitioner's License from the Louisiana State Department of Education.

Please Note:

  • Graduate-level programs from the Department of Teaching & Learning do not require GRE for admissions.
  • An expired teaching certificate is still considered valid for the purposes of being admitted, but for you to be able to add any certifications to it you will have to follow the State Department of Education policies for renewal to be able to add the new certification area.
  • Coursework is mostly online. Please contact the Graduate Coordinator with questions about specific programs.
  • Some courses may require purchase of textbooks and others may have the rental option available. For rentals, you will work with Textbook Rental.
