Dr. Echols' Cumination Celebration

Friday, March 22, 2013

Dr. Celina Echols has 51 students in her educational psychology classes working in a mentoring and tutoring program with Mrs. Wendy Burns, ESL teacher at Hammond Junior High Magnet School (HJHMS). Now in its third year, the program serves students who are primarily African American and from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Southeastern pre-service teachers work to help change the paths of the middle school students by providing support and encouragement, hopefully leading to increased self-esteem and self-confidence, greater success in high school. "The mentees learn that our pre-service teachers care about them and want them to succeed," said Echols, "while the pre-service teachers learn that students' basic needs and emotional needs must be met before the cognitive needs can be understood."
