Tutor of the Year 2011
I am really honored to receive the Tutor of the Year award! I never thought in a billion years that I would ever receive this award. I began working for the Center for Students Excellence in the Fall 2009 semester. It was more for the money than anything else. I didn’t think I had what it took to be a good tutor because I am an international student and English is my second language. I had to overcome the language barrier and fit my students’ learning styles as best as I could. After my first semester, I realized how great it felt to help someone understand the content of a course and put them on the right path to their future. We only have an hour a week with each student, yet some of them are so appreciative of the help. I feel proud when my students reach a “that’s easy” moment. I love to see a student being comfortable with a subject he or she used to, and I quote, “HATE.”
I have to admit that working at the Center has allowed me to better myself. This job has made me realize that I can actually have an impact on someone else’s life, and there’s not a better feeling than that. The experience of working at the CSE has also allowed me to develop my communication skills which are very important in my field of study, business. This job makes me feel like I am part of something bigger. Every tutor is different, but in the end we all want to do our best to lead students to success. Applying to be a tutor and working at the CSE is one of the best decisions I have made. It has been a life changing experience, and I have to thank the staff and all my students for their part of that.
