Tutoring

Tutoring in Action

FREE tutoring services are available on the main campus to all currently enrolled Southeastern students.  Historically, services are offered in core courses common to most degree programs.  Available session times, courses covered and qualified tutors vary by semester.

Peer tutors are able to assist students with the following:

  • Developing effective learning strategies

  • Becoming active and engaged learners

  • Developing fundamental skills necessary for learning course content

  • Identifying and solving problematic areas in order to effectively clarify course content

  • Integrating application of course concepts and test taking patterns

  • Increasing problem solving and critical thinking skills

  • Improving academic confidence

Scheduled-Appointment Tutoring

A limited number of appointments are available Monday through Thursday on a first-come first-served basis, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Appointments are scheduled depending upon the course requested, tutor availability and the availability of the applicant. To fill out a form, come to Southeastern Hall, Room 114.  Weekly sessions are held through the last week of classes; no tutoring is available during finals.

Applicants are scheduled for one 45-minute session per week unless otherwise approved by the Coordinator. In order to serve more Southeastern students, applicants will be placed in small groups of students with the same instructor. Appointment notification is sent via university email. It is important that students come prepared with necessary materials, attempted homework and questions.

There is an appointment attendance policy in place. Students are asked to contact the Center in advance at 985.549.2434 or by email at learningassistance@selu.edu if there is a conflict and they cannot attend. However, after a total of three missed sessions (whether cancelled or no-show), all appointments will be cancelled in that course for the balance of the semester. An attendance policy reminder will be sent after two absences.

Drop-in Tutoring -- Fridays Only

Drop-in tutoring is available in pre-selected math, chemistry and physics courses, Friday, 8:00 - 12:00, Southeastern Hall, Room 114. Students are able to work with the tutor on a first-come, first-served basis and for an unspecified amount of time with the understanding that tutors may be assisting several students in different courses concurrently.  Students may attend both appointment-scheduled and drop-in tutoring during the spring and fall terms.  See the following list of current courses:
