ABITA BREWERY

Fourteen slides of the workings of the Abita Brewery, Abita Springs, Louisiana.

Slide 1-Title slide. This small photo-documentary is on the Abita Brewery and the process that goes into making their product. The Abita Brewery is located 30 miles east of Hammond. This operation, founded by Brooks Hamaker, was started as a hobby, and in the 5 years of existence has grown into a full fledged profitable business.

Slide 2-

To make their beer, they import barley and malt from Belgium and Germany

Slide 3-

The barley and malt are placed into this grinder where it is made into a fine power

Slide 4-

The powder is then transferred to the first tank where hops and water are added to create an oatmeal like substance. Brew master Brooks Hamaker is shown testing the substance for consistency.

Slide 5-

The substance is then transferred to the heating tanks where it is cooked.

Slide 6-

After cooking, the raw brew is again transferred to fermenting tanks where it ferments for 10 days.

Slide 7-

To remove all impurities, the beer is then filtered.

Slide 8-

After filtering, it is placed into still another vat, where carbon dioxide is added. This gives the beer the ability to form a white head.

Slide 9-

Bottling starts here at the beginning of the line.

Slide 10-

The bottles are loaded on a conveyor belt.

Slide 11-

The bottles are sent to be washed and sterilized.

Slide 12-

After sterilization, the bottles are then filled and capped.

Slide 13-

Labels are then added to finish the bottling process.

Slide 14-

After bottling, the bottles are then cased and shipped anywhere from Lake Charles to Miami, Florida.
