The Common Read Program at Southeastern is managed and hosted by The Writing Center.
Each semester, students in English 101 and English 102 classes are required to read
the Common Read book, respond to the text in class, and write literary analysis essays
on the book. In addition to offering tutoring for the Common Read, The Writing Center
also hosts several events related to the Common Read, including student and faculty
presentations. On Common Read Day, the semester's featured author of the Common Read
book visits Southeastern to present public readings, answer questions, share writing
strategies, and meet with English students who are reading the book. This year's Common
Read text is Life On Mars by Tracy K. Smith, the Poet Laureate of the United States. For more information about
the Common Read, visit the English Department's Common Read page.
