A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, by Yiyun Li
The Southeastern English Department is proud to feature award-winning author Yiyun Li and her short story collection A Thousand Years of Good Prayers for the Spring 2015 Common Read.
In the weeks leading up to the main event, the Writing Center hosted several Speaker Series events, during which professors from different departments across Southeastern gave lectures relating to this semseter's Common Read book.
Dr. Hyde, from Southeastern's History Department, gives a lecture on Chinese history, from the Waring States Era to the decline of communism, in order to give cultural context for the stories included in Li's works.

Each semseter, students across the Southeastern English Department read, study, and react to the Common Read works, and this semester was no exception. English 101 and 102 students created projects and wrote papers detailing with and reacting to A Thousand Years of Good Prayer. During the Common Read main event, students put their efforts on display in the lobby of the Student Union Theater and on its stage.
