Student Self-Care Checklist

These are the most commonly recommended over-the-counter medications to treat
the most common illnesses and useful supplies. DO NOT take any medication if you
are allergic to it or have medical conditions that would be worsened by any of these
medications.

 

  • Digital Thermometer
  • Kleenex
  • Tweezers
  • Band-Aids
  • Heating Pad/Ice Pack
  • Sun Screen
  • Insect Spray
  • Chapstick
  • Visine-dry/itchy eyes
  • Tylenol (Acetaminophen)– fever, headache, pain
  • Motrin/Advil (Ibuprofen)– fever, headache, pain
  • Claritin (loratadine) OR Zyrtec (cetirizine) OR Allegra (fexofenadine)– allergy & common cold symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, post nasal drip, itching/red/watery eyes.
  • Flonase (fluticasone nasal) OR Nasacort (triamcinolone nasal) steroid nasal sprays for allergy & cold symptoms. Also helps with pressure/congestion in ears.
  • Sudafed (pseudoephedrine/phenylephrine) for nasal/sinus/head pressure or congestion and clogged/pressure in ears. DO NOT take if you have high blood pressure!
  • Saline Nasal Spray– nasal congestion & post nasal drip
  • Benadryl (diphenhydramine) works well for allergies or insect bites (wasp/caterpillar stings)
  • Delsym (dextromethorphan) to quiet cough
  • Mucinex/Robitussin (guaifenesin)– chest congestion/coughing & loosening phlegm in the chest.
  • Sore throat lozenges & cough drops
  • Pepto-Bismol– nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Hydrocortisone Cream– reducing redness, itching & swelling associated with insect bites or rashes.
  • Antacid (Tums, Maalox)– indigestion, heart burn.
