CHE for Parents

Welcome to the Southeastern Family!

Housing

The freshman year is a year of transition, and your son or daughter may feel overwhelmed.
Some may even drop out of school, posing problems for themselves, the parents, and
the University.

Southeastern is committed to providing resources to optimize your student’s successful
transition from high school to college.

The College of Honors and Excellence (CHE) serves as a point-of-contact for all incoming
freshmen. Your student will be  assigned an academic advisor who will guide him/her
through the first-year experience.

The CHE is located in the Student Union Annex, first floor north entrance. You can
contact our office at 985-549-3981 or [email protected]

Support programs in the CHE include

Advising by Academic Focus Groups

Professional advisors, who understand the demands of the student’s area of interest
or major as well as student development issues, will meet with your son or daughter
at least twice during each of the first two semesters.

Career Exploration

Certified career advisors are available by appointment to help students who are undecided
about their major. Up-to-date occupational information helps students understand college
majors and job opportunities.

Free Tutoring

For students who want to be proactive in making good grades, qualified peer tutors
provide tutoring in a variety of common core subjects. Tutoring is most effective
when students seek help BEFORE they make a low grade, regularly attend scheduled sessions,
and are actively engaged in the learning process. Tutoring is about meeting your son
or daughter where they are academically and modeling transferrable learning strategies.

Southeastern 101: Freshman Success

Southeastern (SE) 101 is a course designed to ensure first-year student success. The
instructor of their SE 101 course serves as their academic advisor/coach.

This two-hour credit graded success course aims to provide students with the tools
needed to manage their emotional, social, and academic transition to the university.
It is designed to help them cultivate effective and adaptable behaviors, develop successful
academic strategies, and to connect with a professional academic advisor to explore
career options, academic plans, and target the skills needed to be a successful college
student.

Class will meet twice weekly and use the computer platform “Moodle” as a supplemental
resource. At the midpoint of the semester, students will be required to attend individual or
small group academic advising/coaching sessions in lieu of group class meetings.

If your son or daughter contacts you with problems, your first question should be:
“Have you spoken to your SE 101 instructor/CHE academic advisor?” The CHE was developed
to help your son or daughter succeed and to bolster your confidence that someone will
always be available.

Southeastern 102: Freshman Academic Coaching

Southeastern (SE) 102 provides student-focused academic coaching by engaging and encouraging
first-year students on academic probation to identify the personal and academic strategies
necessary to succeed as college students. Students will be provided with semester-long
support in areas such as time management, test preparation, note-taking, and learning
strategies.

In SE 102, students will examine personal and academic concerns, perceived barriers
to success, strengths, and needs, and will devise a personalized plan of action for
succeeding academically to earn a Southeastern degree.

Federal Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA was enacted in 1974 to ensure the rights and privacy of students while pursuing
a college education. For that reason, neither faculty nor staff can provide you with
any information about your son or daughter and his or her progress in school. Click
here for more information about FERPA and how it may affect you.
