Master of Science in Athletic Training

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies is excited to house the Master of Science in Athletic Training degree (MSAT). This degree will provide a comprehensive, progressive, educational and clinical foundation to prepare graduates for a career in Athletic Training. Certified Athletic Trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients in professional and collegiate sports, public and private schools, sports medicine clinics, occupational health settings, physician offices, as well as many other emerging and developing settings. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a healthcare profession.

  • Classes taught by nationally recognized experts in their field who hold doctoral degrees.
  • Students will be eligible to sit for the Board of Certification national credentialing examination.
  • Clinical experiences with high school, college, and professional teams as well as in various other settings.
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited (Commission on Accreditation for Athletic Training Education) athletic training program.



  • Complete 60 credit hours of required coursework earning the grade of “C” or higher in each course.

  • Earn a cumulative graduate school GPA of 3.0 or higher, and a grade of “C” in no more than 2 courses.
  • Complete a capstone research project and earn a passing grade for both the written project and presentation.



Prerequisites: Prerequisite courses (UG courses at Southeastern or equivalent from other universities):
    1. Biology (eg. GBIO 151)
    2. Human Anatomy & Physiology (eg. ZOO 250/ZOO 251)
    3. Biomechanics or Physics (eg. KIN 372)
    4. Chemistry (eg. CHEM 101 or 121/CLAB 103 or 123)
    5. Exercise Physiology (eg. KIN 392)
    6. Motor Learning/Development (eg. KIN 321)
    7. Health/Wellness (eg. HS 133)
    8. Psychology (eg. PSYC 101, KIN 436)
    9. Statistics (eg. MATH 241)

– 2.5 cumulative GPA.

– A minimum of 40 hours of athletic training observation under the supervision of a
certified (and licensed for those states that require licensure) athletic trainer.

future professional and personal goals? Why athletic training is the profession you
want to pursue? What resources will you use to help you succeed?

-(3) Letters of recommendation (2 professional [at least 1 from the ATC you
observed under) and 1 personal/character)

-(1) Current resume’

-Earned undergraduate degree accepted if aforementioned standards are met.

The Master of Science in Athletic Training degree (MSAT) at Southeastern Louisiana University is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), 2001 K Street NW, Third Floor North, Washington, DC 20006 USA. The program is currently applying to the CAATE for a change in level of degree and is pending approval.


Board of Certification (BOC) Exam Scores
