Macaluso/Gugliuzza Family Endowed Scholarship
For 31 years, Joe Macaluso (1975), a Hammond, La., native and current New Orleans
resident, traveled the world throughout his legal career, from South America to Europe
to the Middle East. Always attributing his life successes to his education, Joe established
this scholarship in tribute to his paternal and maternal families for a student graduating
from a Tangipahoa parish public high school, with first preference to a graduate of
Hammond High School and second preference to Independence High School.
The Mark MacNutt Memorial Scholarship in Computer Science
The scholarship was established by the mother of Mark MacNutt ‘88 Esther MacNutt
along with other family, friends and colleagues. Mark MacNutt ‘88 received a BS in
Computer Science from Southeastern and soon after graduation he became employed full
time in the office of Computing Services. He quickly became the Systems Engineer
Coordinator. The scholarship will benefit an outstanding student majoring in Computer
Science.
Mary Bridges Magee Scholarship
The scholarship was established in honor of Mary Bridges Magee, by her daughter, Mary
Jane Fabre ‘64 and family and friends. Mary was an LPN who worked as a critical care
nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Seventh Ward Hospital (now North Oaks Health
System) in Hammond. Her daughter felt her mother would be very happy to know that
she was helping a young person with financial need and personal challenges realize
their dream of becoming a nurse. The scholarship is designated to assist Nursing
students.
George A. Maier, Jr., Endowed Scholarship in Business
The scholarship was established by George Maier ‘67 to provide financial assistance
for a Business major with an interest in Finance to be awarded to a graduate of a
West St. Tammany Parish high school.
Hansjoerg Maissen Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Tom Anderson ‘73 and Donna Gay Borden Anderson
‘81 recognizing Tom’s longtime friend, Hans Maissen. Mr. Maissen is an accomplished
hospitality industry executive and is the owner/operator of Maissen Consultants. This
endowment provides funds for a student wishing to do study abroad in History or Political
Science.
Beverly L. Manzella Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
The scholarship was established by her husband, John Manzella, Jr. ‘63 in recognition
of the nurses who cared for her during a long illness. The scholarship benefits a
student from Louisiana majoring in Nursing.
Lura Hornosky Manzella Memorial Scholarship in Athletics (Baseball)
The scholarship was established by John Manzella, Jr. ‘63 in honor of his mother.
The scholarship supports a Southeastern baseball player.
The Gregory Caballero Manzella Memorial Endowed Scholarship in History
The scholarship was endowed in Gregory’s memory by his father, John Manzella, Jr.
‘63. Gregory Caballero ’78 earned a degree in Government from Southeastern, but his
passion was history. The scholarship will support a Louisiana student majoring
in history who does not qualify academically for TOPS.
John and Beverly Manzella Endowed Scholarship in Business Administration
The scholarship was established by John Manzella, Jr. ‘63 and his wife Beverly. John
is a generous Southeastern Business graduate who has established a number of academic
and athletic scholarships. The scholarship will provide financial support to a student
majoring in Business.
Paul M. and DeNise S. Marek Scholarship in Finance or Accounting
Colonel Paul Marek, the former Director of University Police at Southeastern, established
the scholarship. Paul was a graduate of the FBI Academy and the U.S. Army Command
College and was a professor of Military Science. He endowed the scholarship to provide
assistance to a finance or accounting major at Southeastern.
Grace “Mama” Marino Scholarship
This scholarship was established by formerLion football player Gino Marino ‘74 and friends. The scholarship honors Gino’s mother, Grace “Mama” Marino. Gino is a former Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Business
and emeritus board member of the Southeastern Foundation. The scholarship benefits
a student from East Baton Rouge parish.
Dr. Daniel and Judy Brandt Marshall Endowed Scholarship in Biology
The scholarship was established by Dr. Daniel Marshall ‘65 and his wife Judy Brandt
Marshall ‘67 to benefit a student majoring in biology.
J. E. and Mattye Lou Martin Scholarship in Physics
The scholarship was established with an estate gift from Mattye Lou Martin. Her husband,
JE Martin (1917-2002), retired from Southeastern in 1982 after nearly 35 years as
a Physics professor at Southeastern.
Donald E. Martinez Endowed Scholarship in Accounting
Dr. Michael Martinez ’76 endowed a scholarship to honor the memory of his father Donald,
who owned Martinez Tax Service in Hammond. It was established as a way to pay forward
the scholarship that Michael himself received and will provide assistance to an Accounting
major.
Jennie LeMarca Masaracchia Endowed Scholarship in Education
The scholarship was established by her daughter, Antonina “C.C.” Schillage and son-in-law,
Dominick Schillage, and their business, S&S Sports, to recognize her memory and her
commitment to education. Jennie was a 1941 graduate in Education. The scholarship
will benefit a female athlete majoring in Education and may be awarded to a beginning
freshman.
Sadie Pugh Mashburn Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
The scholarship was established by the family of Jack and Sadie Mashburn. Sadie Pugh
Mashburn was a student at Southeastern when she changed course and opened Pugh’s
Flower Shop in Hammond. She and her husband Jack Mashburn ‘33 were very involved in
business and community affairs and are remembered especially for their wonderful restaurant,
Mashburn’s, which featured many of Sadie’s family recipes. The scholarship supports
a nursing student in his or her Junior year.
Mathematics Faculty Scholarship
The scholarship was established through the generosity of faculty, alumni, and friends
of the university in order to provide assistance to a deserving student majoring in
Math or Math Education at Southeastern.
Ken and Christina Matherne Endowed Scholarship in Athletics
The scholarship was established by Ken Matherne, owner of the Global Wildlife facility
and friend to Southeastern. It supports a student participating in intercollegiate
athletics.
Junior & Peggy Matheu Endowment for the Support of Football
The scholarship was established by Lion football player, Joaquin “Junior” Matheau
‘71 and his wife, Peggy Masaracchia Matheu ‘72. Junior is the Accessor of Tangipahoa
parish and Peggy is the retired director of Hammond Head Start. Peggy, an active member
of the FeLions and has served as its President. The scholarship benefits a student
athlete playing football.
Joe L. Mauroner Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Joe Mauroner in 1984 through an act of donation
of property. Mr. Mauroner was a builder and developer in Hammond. The scholarship
provides tuition assistance for a student from Tangipahoa parish.
Carl & Carol Maxson Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by G. Alan Cannon ‘11, ‘15, professor of Mathematics,
for a student participating in a study abroad program and enrolled in a foreign language
course abroad. The scholarship recognizes Dr. Carl Maxson, a former mathematics professor
of Dr. Cannon’s.
Professor Louis and Mildred Keller Mayfield Endowed Scholarship
Mildred Mayfield established the scholarship in her husband’s memory. Her husband
was a professor of business. It benefits students from St. Tammany or Tangipahoa
parish.
Nancy and Terry McCarthy Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Terry McCarthy ‘71 and his wife Nancy McCarthy.
Terry retired from Eli Lilly and Company, and Nancy is retired from the Louisiana
State Board of Nursing. Terry helps keep Kappa Delta Tau alumni engaged with each other and serves as a member of the Southeastern Louisiana
University Foundation’s Philanthropy Committee. The McCarthy’s scholarship is for
a deserving Southeastern student from Tangipahoa, St. Tammany or Jefferson parishes
who is studying Nursing, Nursing Practice, or Psychiatric Mental Health.
Mack & Mildred McGaha Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Edwin Litolff ‘92 and his wife Laura Litolff ‘96
to memorialize the dedication Mack and Mildred McGaha had for their community. It
supports an incoming freshman who is graduating from Pearl River High School.
Evelyn McGee Endowed Scholarship in Education
The scholarship was established by her daughter, Jean McGee. Class of 1947 Evelyn
McGee’s lifelong love of education was instilled at an early age, and she taught in
public schools of Louisiana for 42 years, mostly 5th grade. She was beloved by her
community, having taught generations who became mayors, bankers, plumbers, and strawberry
farmers.
Lucius McGehee Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Webbie McGehee Ory ‘34 in honor of her father,
Dr. Lucius McGehee, one of the founding fathers of the University. The scholarship
is awarded to a student from Tangipahoa parish.
Joel McWilliams Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by his wife, Jane McWilliams and other family and
friends. Joel attended Southeastern and was a member of Sigma Tau Alpha fraternity.
He later transferred schools in order to get a degree in Civil Engineering. Joel was
a professional engineer employed by the Department of Transportation and Development
for over 30 years.. The scholarship supports a student at Southeastern who has successfully
completed 30 hours of study.
Charles Wesley Merritt Scholarship in Business (International)
The scholarship was established with a bequest from Charles Wesley Merrit ‘36, a
graduate in Business Administration, to provide financial support for students majoring
in Business or pursuing a MBA. It especially supports those that are participating
in the international summer abroad program.
Charles Wesley Merritt Scholarship in Business
The scholarship was established with proceeds from a bequest left to the University
by Charles Wesley Merrit ‘36. The scholarships will provide financial support for
students majoring in Business or a Graduate student pursuing a MBA.
MHSF Endowed Cameron Barr Graduate Scholarship in Population Health Management
To pay tribute to their esteemed friend and colleague Cameron B. Barr, the Methodist
Health System Foundation established this scholarship for Population Health Management
graduate students who are Louisiana residents with preference for students living
in New Orleans East, Gentilly or St. Bernard and who work in healthcare in southeast
Louisiana, preferably in the Greater New Orleans area. Mr. Barr felt strongly in
the importance of this program for the future of healthcare. Students are trained
in health system optimizations for improved clinical outcomes and lowered healthcare
costs.
Dr. Joe Miller Scholarship in Sales
Steve Gaffney established this scholarship in Dr. Miller’s name to pay tribute to
the professor that made the biggest impact on the career he went on to have. This
scholarship is for students in the Professional Sales program at Southeastern.
Dr. Lee Mire Endowment for the Support of Football
The scholarship was established by Dr. Louis “Lee” Mire, a football player from 1965
to 1968 who graduated in Zoology. He became a physician and his scholarship supports
a Southeastern football player.
Carl and Anita Mixon Endowed Scholarship
Carl Mixon ’69 and his wife Anita established this scholarship to benefit a veteran
or a dependent of a veteran. Carl came to Southeastern after serving in the armed
services where he was a pilot. He has a State Farm Agency in New Orleans, serves on
the N.O. Police Foundation, and represents members of the armed services who have
issues with retaining jobs when they are called on active duty.
Randy and Barbara Moffett Endowed Scholarship in Nursing
Dr. Randy Moffett served Southeastern for over 25 years, seven of them as University
President. Dr. Barbara Moffett was a Professor in the Nursing Department, and was
Head of the College of Nursing. Together, they endowed a scholarship to help a deserving
student majoring in Nursing.
C.C. & Betty Monnerjahn Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Education
Betty Monnerjahn established the scholarship through a planned gift. Betty retired
after 20 years with Shell Oil and served on the Board of the Council on Aging devoting
much of her time as a volunteer. The scholarship provides tuition assistance to a
student majoring in Education.
Philip Edward Monroe Endowed Scholarship in Music
The scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Monroe in honor and in memory
of their son, Philip. It will assist Southeastern music majors who are from south
Louisiana.
Grady Morgan Endowed Scholarship in Athletic Training
Elmer “Grady” Morgan was an athletic trainer at Southeastern. He returned to his Alma mater,
Southeastern Louisiana College, in 1946, following World War II, as the college’s
first full-time athletic trainer. In 1950, he joined other athletic trainers in Kansas
City, Mo., to form the National Athletic Trainers Association. He was also important
in bringing athletic training help to the first Special Olympics in Hammond. He was
honored by being among the first three athletic trainers elected to the Louisiana
Athletic Trainers Association’s Hall of Fame. His daughter, Kirk Morgan Hood ‘73 endowed
the scholarship in his memory.
The James Ernest Morgan, May Hemby Morgan, and Holman Hemby Morgan Endowed Scholarship
in Education
The scholarship was established by an estate gift of Holman Hembly Morgan ‘47 to
provide financial assistance to a Louisiana resident, first-generation student majoring
in Education. Hemby enrolled at Southeastern in 1943, one of only two men in the class
since it was during WWII. His first job after graduation was teaching science at
Breaux Bridge High School. He later worked for and retired from the Louisiana Department
of Education.
James Ernest Morgan, May Hemby Morgan, and Holman Hemby Morgan First Generation Endowment
The scholarship was established with funds provided by the estate gift of Holman Hemby
Morgan ‘47. It supports a first generation student. A portion of the funds for this
scholarship were provided by a match from the Louisiana State Board of Regents.
Trey Morgan, Evan Pace, and Kyle Schimpf Endowed Scholarship in Baseball
The scholarship was established by John Manzella ‘63 in honor of these 3 Southeastern
baseball players who saved a Canadian woman who was trapped in a burning automobile.This
is just one of several scholarships established by John and it provides tuition support
to a Southeastern baseball player.
The Deborah Rae Morris Endowed Scholarship in Special Education
The scholarship was established by Dr. Elizabeth Evans House and her husband Bill
House to honor Dr. Evans’s sister, Deborah Rae Morris. Dr. Evans, a professor of
Special Education at Southeastern pioneered distance learning at Southeastern with
teacher courses offered on television through PBS. The scholarship will provide financial
support to a junior majoring in Special Education at Southeastern Louisiana University.
James H. Morrison Excellence in Government Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Majorie Morrison in memory of her husband, James
“Jimmy” Morrison Sr. He was a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives
from Louisiana’s 6th congressional district, who held the position from 1943 to 1967.
After leaving Congress, Morrison practiced law in Hammond and joined organizations
devoted to supporting Southeastern. The scholarship benefits a student majoring in
Government or Political Science.
Marjorie A. Morrison Endowed Scholarship in Visual Arts
The scholarship was established by Marjorie Morrison, a lifelong devotee of the arts.
Marjorie was named a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London, England, and
was involved in a myriad of volunteer efforts. In 2010, she was recognized as a Louisiana
Legend by Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Marjorie was the honorary chair of the Campaign
for Visual and Performing Arts which spanned the years 2000-2006. Marjorie established
this scholarship to help students majoring in a discipline of the Visual Arts.
The Marjorie A. Morrison Endowed Scholarship in Music
The scholarship was established by Marjorie Morrison, a friend of the arts and a special
friend to Southeastern. She was well known in the state’s artistic circles being
named a Louisiana Legend in 2010 by Louisiana Public Broadcasting, serving as Vice
President of the Louisiana Council for Music and the Performing Arts, and recognized
as a recipient of the Governor’s Patron of the Arts Award. Locally, she served on
the board of Southeastern’s Columbia Theater and Sim’s Memorial Library and was a
life member of the Hammond Regional Arts Center. She established this scholarship
to help students majoring in Music.
Beau Mothe Endowed Scholarship in Football (Special Teams)
The scholarship was established by Southeastern football player Boyd “Beau” Mothe
‘13 and his family at the time of his graduation from Southeastern. The scholarship
benefits a Southeastern football player on special teams.
