Registration Area

The registration area on the COMET student page has three options as displayed below:

Registration Area

Search for sections - this link allows you to search for available sections for a specific term.  You do not have to login to use this resource.  If you want to search and register or choose sections for future registration use the Register for sections link.  For instructions, click on the Help link in the top right corner of Search for sections form or choose Search and Register for sections (it uses the same form) on the COMET Information Center tree.

Register for sections - this link give you several options to register for sections:

  • Search and Register for Sections
  • Express Registration
  • Registration for Previously Selected Sections
  • Drop Section

For more information about each option, click on the Register for sections link in COMET or click on each option on the COMET info tree.

Drop sections - use this link if you would like to drop a section (other choices also allow you to drop a section while registering for another course)

Build Preferred List of Sections

Registering for sections involves two parts:

  • building a preferred list of available courses
  • using your preferred list to register for courses

Use the Search and register for section option if you would like to look for sections and add them to your preferred list of sections.  Once you have compiled your list you will use this information to register for previously selected sections.  First choose the term you wish to enroll and at least one subject.  Then click the submit button at the bottom of the page.

For example, if you wish to take CJUS-101 and ECON-201 for a specific term, you could enter the information as demonstrated in the example below:

    Search Area

This page offers additional search options.  You can click the help button (on the top right side of the page) for instructions on the use of these features.

Once you have hit the Submit button, a list of courses meeting your search criteria is displayed.  As demonstrated below, check the courses you want to register for under the Select Section(s) column.  Next, hit the Submit button to add your selected courses to your preferred list.

At this point, you have created your list but you are not registered for anything yet.

The next step will allow you to register - Register and Drop Section Form

Registration and Drop Section Form

This form is used to register and drop sections, as well as remove sections from the Preferred Section list.

At the top of the form, the section(s) you selected are displayed in the Preferred Sections list.  The Preferred Sections list also contains any previously selected sections.

At the bottom, the student's Current Registration list is displayed.  You can check the Drop option on each line to drop a registered course.

In the example below, two sections have been previously selected: CJUS-101-01 and ECON-210-60 and no sections have been registered.  To register these sections, choose the RG-Register option under the Action column for each section and hit the Submit button (or, since both sections are being registered, you could also choose the RG-Register option next to the Action for all Pref.  Section at the top of the form without having to choose each individual section, then hit the Submit button).

If you see the STOP symbol (see example on left) on top of the page after clicking the Submit button, no registration has been completed for any section.  If any of the actions being performed was not successful, none of the registration requests are processed (this includes dropping any sections or removing sections from your preferred list at the same time the error occurred).

The Stop symbol is followed by an error statement.  You must correct any errors before clicking the Submit button again.  A registration process could fail for several reasons.  Reasons include but are not limited to the following:

  • the section is full
  • a prerequisite is required for a specific section
  • you have not met with the Advising Office before registering
  • you have academic or financial restrictions that must be resolved

If a specific course is causing the registration process to fail, change the action for that one section to "blank" and continue with the registration and/or drop process by clicking the Submit button.  If the registration was successful the next screen you see should be the Registration Results form.  This is your registration confirmation.  Print a copy for your records.

Using the sections listed previously, above is an example of a Registration Results form.

Express Registration

This option is to allow users to skip the search for sections because they know the exact sections they want.

When users enter section information, they can enter one of the following:

  • subject, course number, and section number
  • synoym number of the section

You must enter the term, unless the section information is unique across all terms.  Once you have completed the form, click Submit.

Below is an example of the Express Registration form that has two sections entered.  The first section enter is CJUS-101-01 and the other is GOVT-102-11, represented by the course synonym 2772.

After hitting Submit, the Register and Drop Sections form is displayed (as demonstrated below) listing the courses added to your Preferred Section list from the Express Registration form.  You would choose the appropriate action(s) and hit Submit to complete the registration.

After hitting Submit, registration restrictions are checked when a user submit a section for registration.
