Day of GivingSoutheastern to hold fourth annual ‘Day of Giving’ Tuesday, April 24
Southeastern will hold its fourth annual day of giving on Tuesday, April 24. Called “All in for Southeastern,” the event is designed to encourage alumni, friends, students, supporters and community members to join together to support the university in an online effort.
“This is a day when we ask all of our Southeastern family to pitch in and make a donation to help Southeastern build on its legacy of excellence. Past years’ funds have been used across campus for projects ranging from classroom technology to student programming and from student research projects to scholarships. We hope this year will be even better,” said Vice President for University Advancement Wendy Lauderdale.
“We also ask for a little help in spreading the word,” she said. “We’re asking our supporters to reach out to four friends who also know the importance of Southeastern but who may not be involved. Encourage them to participate by making a donation as well.”
She said any amount is beneficial and will make a difference in the lives of students, whether its $10 or $10,000.
Additional information is available at southeastern.edu/all-in or at facebook.com/southeasternfoundation.
Donations are tax deductible and can be made at anytime or on any day, but are encouraged between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. on April 24.
For more information, contact the Southeastern Office of University Advancement at 549-2239.

Cefalu Marker unveiled
On Tuesday, April 17, Southeastern officially unveiled a marker commemorating the former Cefalu Coliseum that was removed as part of the Kinesiology and Health Studies building expansion.
Originally dedicated in January of 1956 as the Southeastern Louisiana College Agriculture Coliseum, the building was re-dedicated in April of 1973 in honor of Louisiana State Representative Nicholas Cefalu.
A life-long resident of Amite, Representative Cefalu was a businessman, civic leader and farmer known for his philanthropy. He served a total of 16 years in the Louisiana Legislature and was an avid supporter of education and regional economic development. His dedication to Southeastern made him instrumental in securing appropriations for the construction or renovation of many of the university’s buildings and facilities including the coliseum, D Vickers Humanities Building, the Teacher Education Center and Strawberry Stadium.

Sims Library offers extended hours for finals prep
The first step in preparing for final exams is for students to give themselves sufficient time to study. For the last two weeks of the spring semester, Sims Library will be open late, and on Saturday, so that students can prepare for final exams.
“While some students may thrive on last-minute cramming, for the rest of us, it helps set up a timetable for studying,” said Eric Johnson, Sims Library Director. “That’s why we wanted to announce our extended hours well in advance.
The extended hours are as follows:
Sunday, April 29, 2 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Monday - Wednesday, April 30 - May 2, 7:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Thursday, May 3, 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Saturday, May 5, 11 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, May 6, 2 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Monday – Wednesday, May 7- 9, 7 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Science on Tap presents lecture on fungal farming in ants
Southeastern’s Assistant Professor of Biology April Wright will present the next Science on Tap presentation titled “Farmers Below Our Feet: How Ants Use Fungus to Shape Ecosystems.”
Wright will discuss the natural history of fungal farming in ants, as well as how modern statistical tools have made it possible to understand the evolution of their behavior.
Sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences, the presentation is scheduled May 1, at 7 p.m. at Tope La Catering, 113 East Thomas St. in Hammond, and is free and open to all ages. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with food and beverages available for purchase.
“Farming is one of the most conspicuous ways in which humans have altered the natural environment. But did you know that we are not the only species to farm for our food?” asked Wright. “Ants have been farming fungal crops for food for millions of years before any human ever picked up a rake. Unlike us, ants perform the majority of their farming under the Earth’s surface in specialized chambers, tending enormous fungal gardens right below our feet.”
For information on this or future Science on Tap presentations, contact the Department of Biological Sciences at 549-3740.

Fanfare Call for Proposals
Fanfare, Southeastern’s fall celebration of art and culture, fills the month of October each year. Comprised of performances, lectures and presentations of various types, Fanfare’s mission is to provide informative, engaging topics of significance to Southeastern’s campus community and the Northshore region.
Those interested in developing a Fanfare program are encouraged to contact Executive Director of Columbia Theatre/Fanfare C. Roy Blackwood at cblackwood @southeastern.edu or at 543-4366.
Individuals conducting fascinating research or presenting creative work they would like to share with Fanfare audiences either on the campus or at Columbia Theatre should submit a proposal no later than May 15 to Blackwood at the Columbia Theatre, located at 220 East Thomas Street, in downtown Hammond. Proposals under consideration will warrant a discussion to determine appropriateness.
Blackwood said he has a few dates left in the Fanfare schedule to fill and would enjoy talking with individuals about their ideas.
