Tracy K. SmithU.S. Poet Laureate featured in Southeastern’s ‘Common Read’ program
The Poet Laureate of the United States and author of the book “Life on Mars” will visit Southeastern March 26 as part of the university’s Common Read program.
Tracy K. Smith, the Roger S. Berlind ’52 Professor in the Humanities and director of the Creative Writing Program at Princeton University, will meet with students and the public throughout the day.
Sponsored by the Department of English and the Southeastern Writing Center, Common Read provides students and community members the opportunity to read selected works and then meet a contemporary author.
Events that day include student presentations on the author’s work at 9:30 a.m., an 11 a.m. question and answer session with the author, and a 6:30 p.m. public reading by Smith followed by a book signing and reception. Scheduled in Vonnie Borden Theatre, all events are free and open to the public.
In 2017, Smith was appointed the 22nd United States Poet Laureate. She is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir “Ordinary Light” and three books of poetry.
Her collection “Life on Mars” won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and was selected as a New York Times Notable Book. In 2014 the Academy of American Poets awarded Smith with the Academy Fellowship, awarded to one poet each year to recognize distinguished poetic achievement.
“For several years now, we’ve sponsored the Common Read program, featuring a prominent, contemporary author, and it always serves as an exciting experience for our students,” said David Hanson, head of the Southeastern English Department. “By meeting and talking with an author who they’re studying in class, students gain a rare opportunity to see deeply into an author’s life of writing.”

Kimberly GuiseSoutheastern to celebrate Women’s History Month
Southeastern’s Department of History and Political Science will host Women’s History Month this spring with a free lecture series.
“Held in conjunction with The Pelican State Goes to War: Louisiana in World War II, a National World War II Museum special exhibit, this series incorporates in 2018 all lectures sponsored by the Department of History and Political Science, supported by the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Department of Languages and Communication, and Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies,” said Bill Robison, head of the Department of History and Political Science. “We have a diverse and interesting list of presentations this year. We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating Women’s History.”

The lecture scheduled this week features Kimberly Guise, curator and assistant director of collections at the National World War II Museum. Guise will discuss women and shipbuilding in New Orleans during World War II on March 14 at 11 a.m. in the Student Union Theatre.

The Big Event seeks businesses, organizations for service projects

Students at Southeastern are looking to add area businesses, churches and organizations to their list of job sites for the annual community service day called The Big Event.

Sponsored by the Student Government Association, The Big Event sponsors teams of students who participate in a day of voluntary community service in Hammond and the surrounding area. Now in its eighth year, The Big Event is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather on April 21, a make-up rain date of April 28 has been reserved.
Litter removal, painting, landscaping and other activities at churches and non-profit organizations are the typical jobs handled by hundreds of students who participate in The Big Event each year.
Since students provide their own transportation, job sites should be within 25 minutes of the Hammond campus. Job sites must also have a contact person on location to supervise the work.
The registration deadline for organizations to be included in The Big Event is March 20, and there is no charge to register as a job site.      Organizations can get more information or sign up to provide a job site by visiting the web site southeastern.edu/bigevent.

Orientation Leaders to present at Southern Regional Orientation Workshop
Four of Southeastern’s 32 Orientation Leaders will be presenting at this year’s Southern Regional Orientation Workshop in Orlando, Fla, March 16-18.
Orientation Leaders Karley Bordelon, DeJuan James, Cheyenne Weaver, and Buffy Baker will present “In a galaxy far, far, away: Understanding the story behind each student.”
The presentation will cover how to form a connection with multiple personalities and backgrounds and how to fight for each and every student. Participants will learn how to be selfless and truly understand the meaning of being an orientation leader. Through an interactive presentation involving games, pictures, videos, music, and multiple deep-questioning and evaluating exercises, participants will be challenged to think outside of normal orientation routines.

Teaching and Learning to lead service learning collaboration
Dr. Debra Jo Hailey and Dr. Stacy Garcia will lead Southeastern early childhood education teacher candidates in a service learning collaboration with Tangipahoa schools and Tangipahoa Early Childhood Network to present the fourth annual “Once Upon a Time in the Park” family literacy festival.
The festival is designed to engage young children in literature and extension activities while also encouraging parents to read to their toddlers and preschoolers daily. The family event will take place at the Michael J. Kenney Recreation Center on West Coleman Avenue next to Zemurray Park on Saturday, April 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Interested volunteers may send an e-mail to debra.hailey@southeastern.edu for more information. Volunteers will be issued a certificate of service on site.

Daniel Cuevas

Southeastern student earns national OSH&E scholarship
A Southeastern junior majoring in occupational safety, health and environment has been awarded a national scholarship from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
Daniel Cuevas of Ponchatoula received the $5,000 award based upon his cumulative grade point average, a submitted essay on why he entered the program, and his commitment to obtaining professional certification upon his graduation.
Cuevas is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, serves as the director of risk management for Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and is president of the Catholic Student Association.
When asked what first attracted him to the OSH&E field, Cuevas cited a family friend.
“A family friend from church worked in this field his whole life,” he said. “He was constantly talking to me about it, and it piqued my interest.”
The Southeastern OSH&E program was recently ranked among the top 20 best values in OSHE programs in the country by the website collegevaluesonline.com. The ranking is based on quality of academics; value, which includes tuition affordability and financial aid; and the calculated average return on investment data, a guide to the success of students graduating from the program.
The OSH&E program is nationally accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc. The program grew from a two-year associate’s degree program to a four-year bachelor of science program following considerable input from managers at area industries who reported a significant need for safety, health and environmental professionals. The program prepares students for a variety of positions, including roles of environmental safety and health specialists and safety supervisors.

Southeastern students to host farmers market March 21
The Southeastern student organization Reconnect is hosting a farmers market on March 21 in front of the Student Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sponsored by the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, the market will feature locally grown produce, pies, jams, cookies, coffee, soaps, arts and crafts, live music and more.
“Reconnect is having the biggest Farmer’s Market so far with more students and organizations involved,” said Reconnect President Diana Taj, a biological sciences major from Kenner. “All faculty, students, and friends are welcome to come out and see all of Hammond’s local vendors.”
Student vendors are encouraged to participate in the market by emailing Farmer’s Market Intern Ta’Lynn Belle at talynn.belle@southeastern.edu. A table is provided at no charge.
A student environmental club, Reconnect participates in the Real Food Challenge, a national effort among college students to promote the use of locally grown, healthy and sustainable food products.
For more information, contact Taj at diana.taj@southeastern.edu.

It communicates to students, peers, and the academic and health care communities that the highest standards of excellence are being met. This certification is the mark of distinction for nursing faculty and academic clinical nurse educators.

Bob Kraemer, Edward Hebert, Dan Hollander, Brian Williams, Corinne Cormier, Millie Naquin, Wynn Gillan, and Emily Gusew (Kinesiology) were led by graduate student Ben Boudreaux in publishing an article in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise titled “Validity of Wearable Activity Monitors During Cycling and Resistance Exercise.”
