Southeastern students, alumni invited to Career Fair Sept. 20
Career Fair 2018Southeastern students and alumni are invited to participate in Career Fair 2018, the Office of Career Services’ annual university wide career event.
Held as a benefit exclusively for Southeastern students and alumni, Career Fair 2018 will include over 160 organizational participants and will be held Thursday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Pennington Student Activity Center on the corner of University Avenue and General Pershing.
Representatives from various companies and associations, government agencies, business, engineering, finance and banking industries will be on site to answer questions and take resumes during the free event.
“Career Fair provides Southeastern students and graduates the opportunity to obtain that much needed face time with recruiters to set themselves apart from the rest of the pack and all of those faceless resumes that come their way,” said Ken Ridgedell, director of Career Services. “There is no other venue that allows direct interaction with recruiters and managers from over 160 employers and leaves a lasting, positive impression. In fact, it would take months to speak with as many recruiters as you can in one day at Southeastern’s Career Fair 2018.”
To get the most out of the fair, Ridgedell said students and alumni should bring copies of their resumes; be prepared to briefly discuss career interests, goals, knowledge and skills; and collect brochures and business cards.
For additional information on Career Fair 2018, contact Career Services at 549-2121, careerservices@southeastern.edu, or visit www.southeastern.edu/careerfairinfo.

Homecoming Departmental Decorating Contest registration deadline today
Today’s the deadline to register your office for the Homecoming Departmental Decorating Contest sponsored by SGA and the Alumni Association. This year’s theme is “Have No Fear, Roome’s Here!”

We are looking forward to seeing great super-hero themed decorating around campus to celebrate!

Northshore College Fair scheduled Sept. 18 for high school students
High school students and their parents are invited to learn about universities and colleges across the state and nation as well as their scholarships, financial aid, and admissions requirements at the Northshore College Fair on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
One of the largest college fairs in the state with more than 50 participating colleges and universities from throughout the state and nation, the free event will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Southeastern’s Pennington Center, located on the corner of University Avenue and General Pershing Street.
The fair is open to all high school students and their parents. Students can pre-register for their own special bar codes at gotocollegefairs.com to use at the event. Many vendors will be able to scan the codes to collect the students’ contact and interest information, eliminating the need to complete information cards at each table.
“This is the primary event for high school students and their families to learn more about selecting colleges,” said Anthony Ranatza, Southeastern director of Admissions. “Students and their parents will be able to browse exhibits offering information on academic and career options, university admissions requirements, as well as other scholarship and financial aid opportunities.”
For more information on the fair, contact Southeastern Admissions at 549-5637 or e-mail northshorefair@southeastern.edu. Additional information about Southeastern, including admission requirements and scholarship opportunities, is available at southeastern.edu.

The Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies to host exhibit commemorating World War I centennial

A mock trench, battlefield diorama, and scores of war related items and artifacts are among the features of a special exhibit commemorating World War I at Southeastern’s Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies.
Titled “The War That Did Not End All Wars: Louisiana and the Horror of World War I,” the exhibit will have its grand opening at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies, located on the third floor of Sims Library on Southeastern’s Campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public and will remain open through Dec. 10.
“The guns fell silent on the human slaughterhouse that was World War I in November 1918. Alternately known as the ‘Great War’ and the ‘War to End All Wars,’ World War I represented an unprecedented human tragedy that devastated Europe and gave rise to political and economic configurations that continue to challenge our world today,” said Leon Ford Endowed Chair, Professor of History, and Director of the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies Samuel Hyde. “In our modern technology driven world attention spans are short and memories often fleeting, but the Great War left legacies of profound significance to American development, and Louisiana was no exception.”
Hyde said World War I took mass human suffering to unparalleled depths and, in addition to indescribable butchery on the battlefield, genocide, innovation, pandemic, and racial and ethnic awareness were only a few products of the war.
The exhibit opening is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the launching of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the largest American military offensive in the nation’s history.
“The Meuse-Argonne Offensive not only was our largest offensive operation, it witnessed 47 days of sustained fighting which not only resulted in more American casualties than any other battle in our history, but also brought Germany to its knees and forced the Germans to surrender,” Hyde said.
An educational project designed to inform and entertain that places emphasis on all the nations who participated in the great struggle, the exhibit covers all aspects of the war from the sources of the conflict through the ill-fated Russian incursion and the influenza pandemic that killed thousands at the end of the war, Hyde said.
Exhibit hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday. Hyde said schools and other interested groups are welcome to visit.
“The exhibit is designed to remind us that war is about suffering, and we want to reach as many people as possible with that message,” Hyde added.
For additional information about the exhibit or to schedule a group visit, contact the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies at 549-2151, or email selahistory@southeastern.edu.
