Southeastern's AACSB accredited and nationally noted College of Business outlines its successful academic year.

College of Business

You may have seen Southeastern’s College of Business in the news lately. Recently, Southeastern economics faculty were listed as third most prolific in Southern Region. The College also had a team of finance students win the national Community Bank Case Study competition. It certainly doesn't stop there: the recently published 2015-16 Annual Report shows the many accomplishments, successes, and growth of the College of Business over the past academic year.

Southeastern’s College of Business provides educational experiences for personal, professional and intellectual growth, preparing students for careers in business. The degree programs produce graduates who have skills in-demand by growing state industries. Faculty are experts in their disciplines and many are recognized nationally and internationally through their work.

Students in the College of Business can choose from six distinct undergraduate programs as well as challenging MBA or Executive MBA programs. Both Southeastern and the College of Business value education that extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. All have a focus on experiential learning through Southeastern’s Real-World Ready initiatives, providing opportunities for students to practice in an authentic setting in their intended careers.

College of Business experiential learning activities include internships, service-learning, undergraduate research, civic engagements, study abroad, field experiences, creative activities, practice, hands-on learning, mentoring, leadership training, and apprenticeships. The College’s students can also become more involved through the 10 student organizations.

The Study abroad programs add an invaluable dimension to a student’s academic, cultural, and professional development, as well as providing advantages in an increasingly competitive job market. Two programs travel to Costa Rica and Panama, where Southeastern has strong relationships with business, industry, and governmental leaders.

Here are just a few of the highlights from the Annual Report, which can be viewed in its entirety here.

  • The Finance Investment Analysis classes managed the Heyward Gibbes Hill Scholarship Fund, with assets valued at over $1.3 million. Students used state-of-the-art Bloomberg professional technology to conduct market research and worked with mentors from the investment industry to make buy and sell decisions for over $600,000 in securities.

  • Management 101 course was developed to introduce Business majors to the College. The course was taught by David Faucheux who was ranked No. 2 in the nation for 2014-2015 in the popular student ranking service Rate My Professors.

  • The College of Business hosts several events each semester to engage all business majors with alumni, community leaders, and industry professionals, including Business Perspectives Week, the Livingston Ethic Lecture Series, and Networking Week, which connects students and employers. The College saw an increase in student internship opportunities last year.

  • The College’s Master of Business Administration degree saw a 75% increase in new students in fall 2015 compared to fall 2014. This significant growth also brings increased diversity, as approximately half of the new students have degrees outside of business.

  • Southeastern’s business faculty have conducted on-campus or on-site programs with Columbia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and the Republic of Panamá, offering students and faculty opportunities to broaden their cultural awareness and discover how the international environment impacts governmental and business decision-making. The College of Business also participated in the Hispanic Business and Leadership Institute, the Panama Bilingue Program, and Study Abroad programs in Panama and Costa Rica.
