Southeastern's University Police Department encourages students and employees to buckle up – every trip, every time – while traveling during the holiday season

With the end of semester nearing and the holiday season in full swing, Southeastern students and employees – along with millions of other travelers – will take to the roads to return home, attend celebrations, and visit family and friends. Whether traveling across the country or just across town, drivers and their passengers are encouraged to buckle up to ensure a safe arrival and truly happy holiday.
"The risk of being involved in a serious or deadly car crash increases when the number of cars on the road increases, and the Christmas and New Year's holidays are some of the busiest travel times of the year," said Harold Todd, director of the University Police Department. "We want our Southeastern family to travel safely this season - and that means buckling up, along with other safe driving practices."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wearing a seat belt is the single most effective thing that can be done to protect a driver and passengers in the event of a crash.
Research shows that with proper seat belt use, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent. Seat belts – which save over 13,000 lives every year – are also said to be the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers.
Southeastern students and employees are reminded to buckle up – every trip, every time – during the holiday season and beyond.
