Ghost Light

When the stage and house lights are turned off at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Hammond, on goes the "ghost light." Mostly meant for safety in the extreme dark, it's also a fun theatre tradition to leave a light burning on stage throughout the night to keep the ghosts at bay – or at least keep them company!

The Columbia Theatre's ghost light, a humble garage sale find, pays homage to this whimsical tradition. It is also a symbol of the historic theatre's purpose: to continually illuminate the arts.

The Columbia Theatre's Ghost Light venue, a new concert space featuring local and national up-and-coming music artists, is also named after the fun tradition. Learn more about the Ghost Light's annual concert series, which has featured local acts such as Will Vance and the Kinfolk, River Whyless and West Without.
