(1) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HONORS (ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR) – Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Science and Technology has presented its Alumnus of the Year Award to Patrick Settoon of Hammond, a 1957 graduate whose career as a Southeastern educator and administrator spanned four decades. From left, are Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs John Crain, Patrick Settoon, his wife Barbara, and children Noelle Settoon Vaughan, Randy Settoon, and Rick Settoon.

(5) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HONORS (WASHINGTON) – Darlene Creel of Franklinton, left, was among the award recipients at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Science and Technology’s annual honors convocation April 25. With her is Dean Daniel McCarthy.


     HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Science and Technology recognized the outstanding students in its four departments at the college’s April 25 honors convocation.

     Named the Outstanding Graduating Seniors in Biological Sciences were Jean Elbers of Mandeville and Lauren Stirling of Ponchatoula. Caroline L. Poche of Santa Clara, Calif., was cited as Outstanding Graduating Senior in Chemistry, while Jacob Barger of Hammond received  the Distinguished Graduate in Computer Science honor, and Lisa Bourgeois of St. Amant, the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment.

     Roddy Karl of Greensburg was the recipient of the award for the Distinguished Graduate in Industrial Technology in the bachelor’s degree program; and Darlene Creel of Franklinton received the Distinguished Graduate in the Industrial Technology in the associate degree program. 

     Dean Daniel McCarthy also presented college excellence awards to faculty members Theresa Beaubouef, computer science, for research; Frank Campo, biological sciences, for teaching; and Alan Cannon, mathematics, for service.

     Also at the ceremony in Fayard Hall, the college recognized as its outstanding alumnus Patrick D. Settoon, a 1957 graduate whose career at his alma mater spanned 40 years. Settoon served Southeastern as a chemistry professor, head of the Department of Chemistry and Physics, dean of the College of Science and Technology and, provost and vice president for academic affairs.

     A longtime resident of Hammond, Settoon also was active in the community, serving in leadership positions in many organizations, including the United Way, Kiwanis Club, Dixie Youth Baseball, and Hammond Chamber of Commerce.

     Recently, Settoon’s children established an endowed scholarship in science and technology to honor the 50th anniversary of Settoon and his wife Barbara.

     Additional student honorees included Kayla Bates of Prairieville, Outstanding Senior Award in Mathematics; Angela Gonzalez of Slidell and Rena Paige LeBlanc of Denham Springs, Outstanding Freshmen Award in Mathematics; and Matthew Arbo of Mandeville, Patrick Beben of Baton Rouge and Simon Pfeil of Hammond, Louisiana/Mississippi Mathematical Association of America Sectional Meeting Team Award. Arbo also received the LA/MS MAA Sectional Meeting Individual Award.
