Jacob to head Department of Teaching and Learning

     HAMMOND – Shirley Woods Jacob has been appointed head of Southeastern Louisiana University’s Department of Teaching and Learning in the College of Education and Human Development.

     The department oversees faculty, curricula and students enrolled Southeastern’s early childhood, elementary, middle school and special education programs. The department also provides professional services and leadership for area school systems.

     A member of the Southeastern faculty since 1991, Jacob holds a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. She is a native of Livingston Parish and a resident of St. Tammany Parish. She is a Louisiana certified teacher in the areas of English, Spanish, speech, and gifted education. She is also certified as a supervisor of student teachers, parish supervisor and in the field of principalship.

     “We are pleased to have someone with the extensive educational background and abilities that Dr. Jacob brings to this position,” said Diane Allen, dean of the College of Education and Human Development. “She serves as a valuable mentor to many Southeastern students who aspire to be teachers.”

     A member of Who’s Who Among College Teachers, Jacob is a recipient of the Gamma Beta Phi Outstanding Teacher Award and was recently inducted into Southeastern’s Teacher Education Honor Roll. She is the author of two book editions and numerous articles in national professional journals. Her research interests include classroom management, new teacher induction, mentoring and best classroom practices.
