HAMMOND – When Southeastern Louisiana University’s Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts set the date for its Deco Ball, no one dreamed that the gala fundraiser would conflict with a dream-come-true New Orleans Saints playoff game.

In fact, when the Jan. 13 date was locked in more than a year ago “Saints,” “playoffs” and “dream” were pretty much synonymous.

However, when the playoff schedule firmed up after last weekend’s games, the Columbia staff huddled up to tweak the game plan for Saturday’s festive ball, which is a fundraiser for the new marquee on the façade of the university’s historic downtown Hammond theater.

“We’re Saint’s fans, too,” said Columbia Theatre Director Donna Gay Anderson. “We want our patrons to be able to enjoy the Ball without completely missing the Ballgame.”

“To keep everyone up-to-date on the action in the Superdome, we will have a television available and our wonderful band, the Dominoes, will frequently announce the score,” Anderson said. “And keep in mind, this is the perfect time to test that new TIVO you got for Christmas.”

She said members of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority have also volunteered to mingle among the guests with continually updated scoreboards.

The gala event, scheduled from 8 p.m. to midnight, will feature dancing on the Columbia stage, festivities throughout the theater complex, and food and beverages by Tope’ La Catering.

Tickets for the Deco Ball, $100 per patron, are still available and can be obtained by calling or visiting the Columbia Theatre administrative office, 220 E. Thomas St., 985-543-4366.
