HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s Izzy Moving Dance Theatre will present “Flight” at St. Joseph Abbey in Covington Nov. 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Dana Brewer-Plazinic, director of Izzy Moving Dance Theatre and an instructor of dance in Southeastern’s Department of Music and Dramatic Arts, said the dance genre for the concert is modern. “Each piece defines ‘flight’ in some way – birds, sky, angels, freedom, soaring and raindrops are all used as inspiration in the production,” she said.  “The production is appropriate for audiences of all ages, and we will have refreshments and t-shirts for sale in the lobby.”

Izzy Moving Dance Theatre company members in the production who are also Southeastern students include Kaleigh Brandt, Slidell; Megan Guillot, Hammond; Austyn-Marie Hollowell, Metairie; Nicole Judson and Tiffany White, Baton Rouge; and Bridget Lyons, Church Point.  Southeastern alumnus Daphne Lamendola of Gonzales will also perform in the concert.

The concert is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the St. Tammany Arts Commission.

Brewer-Plazinic said students from Brittany’s School of Dance in Port Allen and Steppin’ Out School of Performing Arts are also performing in the production as part of the grant.

“I applied for the grant to complete a project which included three repertory workshops partnering with local dance studios, two free master classes and two evening performances for the community,” Brewer-Plazinic added.

The master classes will be offered on Saturday, Nov. 17, on the theater stage at the Abbey.  The 10:30 a.m. class is for beginner level dancers, while a class at noon is for intermediate or advanced level dancers.  Both classes will feature modern dance, so dance shoes are not required.  Participants should be dressed in dance pants and a fitted top or leotard.

Tickets for “Flight” are $10 and will be available at the door 1 hour prior to the performance.
