HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University is expanding its scholarship program for students transferring from other colleges and universities.

Southeastern President Randy Moffett said that transferring students who meet certain benchmarks based on ACT scores and grade point averages will be granted the scholarships automatically.  It is another approach the university is using to attract high caliber students, he said.

“Students transfer from one institution to another for a variety of reasons; it may be a matter of transferring from a community college to a four-year institution to complete a degree program, a desire to be in either a larger or smaller environment, the campus climate, or other factors,” Moffett said. “We want these students to benefit from scholarship programs that are similar to those we offer to highly qualified incoming freshman with strong ACT scores and GPAs.”

Moffett said the new Southeastern scholarship should be especially attractive to community college students looking to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree. “This further strengthens the strong partnerships we have developed with the area community colleges,” he added.

The scholarship will be automatic when qualified students apply and are accepted at Southeastern, explained Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management Steve Soutullo. “Their application for admission serves as their application for scholarships as well,” he said.

Soutullo said the awards are in addition to state-provided TOPS scholarships or other non-university scholarships a student may have earned.

Students transferring with more than 12 hours of credit who have a 3.0 or higher transfer GPA will be eligible. Housing supplements are available to students with a 3.6 or higher GPA. The number of semesters covered by the scholarships depends upon the number of hours transferred to Southeastern.

Transfer students with less than 12 hours of college credit will be awarded scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500 per year if they have a 24 or higher ACT score and a minimum 3.0 high school and transfer GPA and are in good academic standing. The scholarships will be awarded for up to seven semesters and also include campus housing supplements and, for the more highly qualified student, meal plans as well.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for community college students across the state, said Louisiana Community and Technical College System President Joe D. May. “Scholarship programs like the one offered by Southeastern will not only help to ease the transition from community colleges into four-year systems, but will also benefit students in recognizing their academic achievements at their previous institutions. It provides much needed assistance to allow them to continue their educational career.”

Information regarding the new awards is available on the Southeastern website, www.selu.edu/scholarships or by calling the Scholarship Services Office at 985-549-5116. Tables that show the amounts of scholarships based on the qualifying ACT scores and GPAs are displayed.

The new scholarships are the latest of several that are being announced at Southeastern. Last month, the university announced the establishment of progression scholarships which will reward students who make steady progress toward completing their degrees within four years.

In addition, for several years Southeastern has offered scholarships for incoming freshmen with ACT scores of 24 or higher and a minimum 3.0 high school GPA. These awards were recently upgraded to include housing and meal supplements. The number of students enrolling at Southeastern who earn these scholarships has more than doubled over the past five years.
