Choruses to perform Sunday at St. Joseph's Abbey

     HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Music and Dramatic Arts will present the Women’s Chorale, University Chorus and the Northshore Chorale in a spring concert on May 4, 4 p.m., at St. Joseph’s Abbey, 75376 River Road in Covington. Admission is free.

     Alissa Mercurio Rowe, director of choral activities at Southeastern, will conduct the choirs in an afternoon of music with the Women’s Chorale performing “Missa Brevis” by Benjamin Britten. Soloists include Melissa Simien, Baylie Stillwell, and Cara Williams (“Gloria”), and Emily Johnson, and Bridget Lyons (“Benedictus”).

     The Women’s Chorale will also perform “Cantique de Jean Racine" by Gabriel Fauré with conductor, Paula Vickers. “Benedicamus Domino (1918)” by Peter Warlock will be conducted by Margaret Davis with Karie Lancon conducting “The Lord bless you and keep you” by English composer and conductor John Rutter. “Bonse aba,” Traditional Zambian song arranged by Andrew Fischer will feature percussionists Jonathan Thomas and Nelson Saltz.

     After a brief intermission, the University Chorus along with the chorales will perform all seven movements of “Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré. The work as a whole is intimate, restrained and somber.

     The Northshore Chorale community chorus is made up of nonprofessional singers with a desire to perform choral masterworks. The University Chorus, a non-audition ensemble, is open to all Southeastern students.

     A full orchestra will accompany the groups along with pianists Angela Draghicescu and Raisa Voldman.
