HAMMOND – New and transfer students have until Aug. 1 to apply for the Southeastern Louisiana University’s fall semester, which gets underway with final registration Aug. 18-19 and the first day of classes on Aug. 20.

Stephen Soutullo, assistant vice president for enrollment management, said an increase in the number of applicants for the upcoming semester indicates that students are getting the message about the benefits of applying early.

Soutullo said the number of applications from beginning freshmen is up 9.5 percent over last year’s record-setting 5,527. “Last year was the first time we had more than 5,000 beginning freshmen applicants,” Soutullo said. “And this year the number is over 6,000.”

As of July 14, the total number of students registered for the fall 2008 semester was over 11,100. With two more summer orientation sessions to go, freshmen registration is up 15 percent. And the average American College Test composite score for those new students has jumped from 21.2 to 21.9, Soutullo said.

“We are very encouraged by the projected numbers for fall 2008,” he said. “We have been communicating to students that applying early pays off in terms of earlier admissions decisions from the university, lower application fees, and, in the case of new or transfer freshmen, priority invitations to our summer orientation programs.

“Apparently, students have gotten our message and the applications are coming in earlier,” Soutullo said. “However, we are still taking applications for admission and anyone who meets our required standards will have no problem enrolling. We want to encourage everyone to apply to the university.”

The Aug. 1 application deadline also applies to registered nurses seeking to participate in Southeastern's new, totally online RN to bachelor of science degree in nursing program, which starts this fall. Part of a statewide initiative designed to enhance Louisiana's workforce, the program is open to applicants who have graduated from an accredited associate degree or diploma nursing program and are in good standing with their licensure board. The fast-track program is offering courses in four and eight-week formats.

“Our advice to students considering Southeastern is to apply for admission to the university as well as for housing, as soon as possible,” Soutullo said.

Southeastern established application deadlines approximately four years ago and last spring pushed those dates forward by two weeks to facilitate processing applications and communicating with new and transfer applicants about application procedures.
