HAMMOND – Singing at Southeastern Louisiana University is not just for music majors. The university’s five ensembles are actively recruiting student vocalists from throughout the campus, said Alissa Mercurio Rowe, director of Choral Activities.

While students do have to audition for the Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir, three ensembles – the University Chorus, Northshore Chorale, and Gospel Ensemble – are open to all students who enjoy singing, Rowe said.

“Did you sing in high school? Do you want to travel to Europe with a choir? Join a choir at Southeastern!” Rowe said.

Rowe said the Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir plan a European trip immediately following the spring 2009 semester. Students who are interested in auditioning for the choirs can schedule an audition now for the fall semester.

The Northshore Chorale and University Chorus are non-auditioned ensembles comprised of university students and community members. Students who wish to participate should register for University Chorus MUS 131/431.  The Gospel Ensemble (MUS 139/439) studies and performs choral music in the gospel tradition.

Rowe said the Women’s Chorale gives members the opportunity to explore music written for treble voices. “Most members of the Women’s Chorale are either majors or minors in music; however, Women’s Chorale auditions are open to all treble voices who desire a high quality musical experience,” she said.

The Concert Choir is Southeastern’s premiere mixed auditioned choral ensemble. “It provides an atmosphere that will help prepare students for the challenges of an ever-changing and highly competitive musical world,” Rowe said. The ensemble explores all musical genres for the chamber vocal ensemble.
