     HAMMOND – ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Jared Coe of the St. Paul School was the overall winner of the 2008 Region 8 Science Fair at Southeastern Louisiana University March 19. His winning project, “Halting Bacteria: Man-made or Natural Agents,” received first place honors in the senior division microbiology category.

     ­Michael Sitarz of ­St. Peter’s School was the overall winner of the junior division. His project, “Soundproofing,” placed first in the engineering category.

     Along with first, second and third place regional winners, Coe and Sitarz will advance to the state science fair at Louisiana State University.

     The Navy Science Achievement Awards were presented to senior division entries Jacob Frost of the St. Paul School and John F. Warren III of Walker High School.

     Junior Division Navy Science awards went to David Englehardt of Mary Queen of Peace, Rebecca Schuber of Mandeville Junior High, Warner King of Heritage School, Elise Frost of St. Peter’s School, and Justin Magrath of Fontainebleau Junior High.

     The Iota Sigma Pi Women in Chemistry Award for the best project by female students in the chemistry, biochemistry and environmental science divisions was awarded to Elizabeth Holzenthal of St. Scholastica Academy and Corissa Blount of Holden High School.

     Justin Magrath of Fontainebleau Junior High received the Southeast Louisiana Area Heath Education Center Award for the best project related to genetics. Austin Miller of Holy Ghost School was the runner-up.
