HAMMOND – Applications are now being accepted for participation in the Southeastern Louisiana Writing Project’s (SLWP) Invitational Summer Institute in Teaching Writing.

Designed for teachers who use writing in their classrooms, the institute will meet at Southeastern Louisiana University from June 23-July 24, Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“This program is for teachers who use writing in their instruction, who are eager to share what they have learned and who want to learn from other experienced classroom teachers,” explained Richard Louth, SLWP director and professor of English at Southeastern.

In the institute, teachers from across the curriculum will write and study the teaching of writing, Louth explained. “They will have the opportunity to reflect on their own teaching and share their best practices with each other,” he said.

Participants will work on personal and professional writing and will also develop workshops on teaching writing that can be used as professional development in their local schools.

As summer fellows at Southeastern, the participants will receive free tuition, a $200 stipend, materials for the class and six hours of graduate credit.

Applicants should submit a resume that includes contact information including phone numbers and e-mail addresses, the school and grade level where the applicant teachers; a brief description of writing activity in their classrooms; and a letter of nomination from a supervisor or from a member of the SLWP. Applications should be addressed to Dr. Richard Louth, SLU Box 10327, Hammond, LA 70402 or by e-mail to rlouth@selu.edu.

The institute is affiliated with the National Writing Project (www.writingproject.org) and is a cooperative effort involving the Southeastern College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development. Additional information is available by calling 985-549-2012 or 2100 or from the SLWP Web page, www.selu.edu/slwp.
