HAMMOND -- Elementary education major Jamie Barthelemy of Ponchatoula and secondary education major Shannon Ehrmann of Montz have been named the Outstanding Student Teachers in Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Education and Human Development.

Barthelemy and Ehrmann received their awards at the college’s annual honors convocation on May 1. They were selected from among five nominees, also including Cary Froeba of Covington, Naomi Sutton of Ponchatoula and Nicole Smith of Hammond.

At the 11 a.m. ceremony in the Cate Teacher Education Center Kiva, the college also recognized as its outstanding alumnus Rosemary Tripi Wong, co-author of “The First Days of School,” the best-selling book ever in the field of education. A 1974 Southeastern graduate, Wong has also produced an award winning video series, “The Effective Teacher.”

Wong, who received her master’s degree in education from Louisiana State University and her doctorate from Brigham Young University, began her career as a classroom teacher in East Baton Rouge Parish schools. She taught there for five years before accepting a position with the Mountain View School District in California.  From 1980-1985 Wong served Mountain View schools as a classroom teacher, media specialist and student activities director.

Wong serves on the boards of Meals on Wheels of San Francisco and The First Days of School Foundation and is a past member of Self Help for the Elderly in Santa Clara, Calif., and the Tibetan Aid Project Fundraising Committee.

Couvillion’s office also partners with Southeastern to host the annual Child Welfare Conference for foster and adoptive parents and the social workers who work with these families.
