St. Paul's student wins Region 8 Science Fair

     HAMMOND – ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­John Villarrubia of the St. Paul’s School was the overall winner of the 2009 Region 8 Science Fair at Southeastern Louisiana University March 20. His winning project, “Pollution Place: Manmade or Natural,” received first place honors in the senior division environmental sciences category.

     ­Austin Magee of ­Pine High School was the overall winner of the junior division. His project, “Bifield Browns Effect,” placed first in the physics and astronomy category.

     Along with first, second and third place regional winners, Villarrubia and Magee will advance to the state science fair at Louisiana State University.

     For the first time, the Region 8 Science Fair welcomed a corporate sponsor, Valero St. Charles Refinery. The company is sponsoring the fair as a way of supporting educational activities for children. The company will also sponsor the Louisiana Science Olympiad, which will be held at Southeastern on April 4.

     Also at the fair, the Navy Science Achievement Awards were presented to Sophie Giberga and Michelle Lawrence of St. Scholastica Academy. Junior Division Navy Science awards went to Elise Frost of St. Scholastica Academy, Hannah Pittman of Franklinton Junior High, and Robin Spiess of Monteleone Junior High.

     The Iota Sigma Pi Women in Chemistry Award for the best project by female students in the chemistry, biochemistry and environmental science divisions was awarded to Katie Gagliano of St. Peter’s School and Michelle Lawrence of St. Scholastica Academy.

     Natalie Zimmer of Mandeville Junior High and Derek Denz of the St. Paul’s School received the Southeast Louisiana Area Heath Education Center Award for the best projects related to genetics.
