HAMMOND – Three celebrity judges will lend their taste buds for the day to Southeastern Louisiana University’s third annual “Game Day Gumbo Cook-Off” this Saturday in Friendship Circle.
Hammond Mayor Mayson Foster, WWL-TV reporter Katie Moore, and Louisiana State Representative of District 77 John Schroder, who is also a former Lion football player, are charged with the task of deciding which gumbo is their favorite among 10 entries. The tailgate chefs will try to woo the judges to claim the coveted Lions Game Day Gumbo Champion paddle and title of “Judges Choice.”
The public is invited to taste the variety of gumbo entries during the free contest and vote for their favorite as the Lions take on Stephen F. Austin, the last Saturday home football game of the season.
Each “taste-and-vote” asks for a donation of $1 with proceeds going to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which has adopted the event as its annual fundraiser. Gumbo tasting and voting will take place from 12-1:30 p.m. to determine the “Fan’s Choice” winner. Each participating tailgate site will be identified with a “Tasting Station” sign and will have a jar so everyone can vote for their favorite flavor. Winners will be announced during halftime of the 2 p.m. game.
In addition to the Gumbo Cook-off, Saturday’s game will also honor scouts and members of the military. Scouts in uniform will be admitted to the game for $5, and the first 200 military personnel and/or veterans will be admitted free in honor of Veterans Day.
Tickets are available through the Lion ticket office, 985-549-5466.
