HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University’s St. Tammany Center, part of the university’s Division of Extended Studies, is offering north shore residents a variety of non-credit course programming this fall in the areas of workforce and professional development, test preparation, and leisure classes.
Participants can register for the courses online via the “Non-Credit Courses” link at www.selu.edu/sttammanycenter or by phone at 985-893-6251, said Laura Zammit, assistant director of the center, located on the third floor of the St. Tammany Parish government complex on Koop Drive near Mandeville.
“Professional development courses and skills training are two ways Southeastern is helping enhance individual marketability,” Zammit said. “If you are looking for ways to set yourself apart, earning certification in PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) is a great way to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in today’s job market.”
Southeastern, in partnership with SHRM (Society for Human Resources), is offering the SHRM Learning System Course. Led by Fran Norword, an instructor of management in Southeastern’s College of Business, the course will help prepare human resource professionals for the PHR or SPHR certification. The course will lead test candidates through a comprehensive review of key human resource management concepts and trends based on the 2009 Human Resources Certification Institute, Zammit said.
The interactive course includes six printed workbooks that cover topics tested on the PHR/SPHR certification exam, more than 1,600 test questions, an online resource center, and an interactive case study designed for SPHR candidates. The course starts Sept. 21 and meets Mondays from 6 – 9 p.m. at the St. Tammany Center.
Zammit said the center has expanded its ACT test preparation courses, designed for high school students to improve ACT scores, with two fall courses prior to the Oct. 24 and Dec. 12 test dates. “Mathematics and English will be emphasized, and the course is limited to 15 students per section,” she said. “Each section meets five times on Thursdays at the St. Tammany Center and is lead by two St. Tammany Parish high school teachers.”
Also offered are courses and certification testing on Microsoft desktop products, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher, as well as new Adobe computer graphics classes on Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver.
In partnership with St. Tammany Parish government environmental experts, the center will again offer its popular “Green Living Seminars,” a public education series on residential applications designed to save money through green living. Speakers give practical applications and demonstrate proven strategies and techniques to conserve both energy and money.
For those looking to learn a new hobby, the center is also offering a range of leisure courses including digital photography, digital image editing, and basic drawing.
“Back by popular demand, award-winning novelist Robin Wells, author of ‘Between the Sheets,’ will teach his novel writing course,” Zammit said. “The six-week course covers the basics of writing novel-length fiction, including story structure, plotting, character development, dialogue, description and point of view. Wells will also critique up to 25 pages of a class member’s novel and offer tips on getting published.”
Professional photographer Chuck Billiot will continue his popular series on digital photography and editing digital images. “Chuck’s ‘dare to be unique’ approach to photography has won critical acclaim from his peers, as well as several awards from the Greater New Orleans Professional Photographer’s Guild,” Zammit said.
All classes will be held at the St. Tammany Center. To register or for a complete list of classes, visit selu.edu/stc. Registration and payment are available online or by phone at 985-893-6251.
