HAMMOND –  Southeastern Louisiana University will sponsor International Education Week Nov. 15-19 with a variety of events, including a multicultural buffet, a panel discussion entitled “Islam and the West” and a concert featuring international music.
Eric Summers, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, said the week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education and is aimed at promoting programs that prepare students for a global environment.
All events are open to the public, and there is no charge for Southeastern students.
The week at Southeastern will start with International Night at 5 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Ballroom. Sponsored by the Department of Languages and Communication, the evening will include an international buffet catered by Aramark and a talent show featuring foreign language students. A cash donation of  $5 will be collected to support scholarships for Southeastern’s Study Abroad program. Information on the Study Abroad program will be available at the event.
Free henna tattoos, a temporary dying of the top layer of skin, will be available for students on Tuesday beginning at noon in the Student Union mall. “This was such a popular feature of last year’s international week, that we decided to offer it again,” Summers said.
The panel discussion “Islam and the West” will be presented on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre. The discussion is intended to provide information and insight on the Islamic religion from the perspectives of Southeastern faculty, students and community members practicing Islam in the United States.
The week will conclude on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the concert “Music of Many Countries” in Pottle Auditorium. The free concert is sponsored by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts.
