HAMMOND – An informational meeting designed to explore the development of a Southeastern Louisiana University student veterans organization will be held at noon, Wednesday (Nov. 17) in Student Union room 222.
The goal of the meeting is to determine the level of interest in forming a Southeastern chapter of the Student Veterans of America, said Mark Lawrence, a communication major who is spearheading the project.
“Oddly enough, Southeastern has not had an organization primarily to address issues of veterans,” said Lawrence. “Currently we have nearly 250 students who are veterans of the various military branches, so we believe we have the basis for a solid organization.”
The Student Veterans of America was organized to serve as the definitive organization to advocate for student veteran issues at the state and national level. The only campus-based chapter in Louisiana currently is at LSU.
Rene Abadie, director of the Southeastern Office of Public Information and a U.S. Army veteran, has agreed to serve as chapter advisor. Assisting in the development of the organization is Kay Maurin, director of the Office of Disability Services.
For additional information, contact Abadie at 549-2341 (rabadie@selu.edu) or Lawrence at Mark.Lawrence-2@selu.edu.
