St. Paul's wins Southeastern Foreign Language Festival

     HAMMOND – St. Paul’s School of Covington took top honors at the 29th annual Foreign Language Festival at Southeastern Louisiana University April 5.
     The festival drew 14 schools from surrounding parishes to compete in Spanish and French poetry, prose, and extemporaneous speaking categories and as groups in music and plays.
     St. Paul’s School of Covington took top honors in Tier 1, the division for magnet schools and schools with more than 600 students, while the Louisiana School of Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches garnered the highest award for Tier 2, schools with fewer than 600 students. 
     Best School in Spanish was St. Paul’s, while Best School in French was Mt. Carmel Academy of New Orleans.
     In the French music category, winners were St. Scholastica Academy of Covington, first; Mt. Carmel, second; and Ponchatoula High School, third. In the French play category, John Ehret High School of Marrero was first, Mt. Carmel, second; and St. Scholastica, third.
     Spanish music winners were Mt. Carmel, first; St. Paul’s School, second; and North Lake Christian School of Covington, third. In the Spanish play category, Mt. Carmel was first; Academy of Our Lady in Marrero, second; and St. Scholastica, third.
     Two students received special festival awards. Joshua Springer of Baton Rouge Magnet High School received the Wallonie-Bruxelles International Scholarship, presented by the French community of Belgium, while Patrick Richards of St. Paul’s School received a Mexican cruise from New Orleans, presented by the Southeastern Languages and Communication Department.
