HAMMOND – The science team from Baton Rouge Magnet High School placed first in the senior high division of the state Science Olympiad held Saturday (April 16) at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Second place in the division went to Ben Franklin High School in New Orleans with Lafayette High School claiming the third position.
In the middle school division, St. John Berchman’s Cathedral School placed first, St. Matthew the Apostle School in River Ridge was second, and St. Pius Elementary School in Lafayette placed third.
All participants were finalists in the state Olympiad, which Southeastern hosted for the 10th consecutive year. Teams were chosen for the state championship after finishing in the top five at regional competitions.
Linda Munchausen, professor of chemistry and coordinator of the event, said 21 teams from around the state participated in the Science Olympiad. Faculty, staff and community volunteers assisted in the judging of dozens of events that went on throughout the day.
“It’s an opportunity for some of our bright young students to show their science skills in a friendly competition,” Munchausen said. “We’re always amazed at their enthusiasm and ingenuity, and it gives them great exposure to the profession of science.”
Students competed in events that tested their knowledge of science disciplines such as biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. Events such as Crime Busters, Road Scholars, Disease Detectives, Storm the Castle, and Battery Buggy drew on formats used in popular television shows, athletic and board games.
