HAMMOND – Eighteen St. Tammany Parish junior and senior high students recently completed Southeastern Louisiana University’s 2011 “Zoom Into Careers” summer workshops. They were joined by students from five parishes across the region in experiencing a full spectrum of skills from one of four career fields.
Participating high school students were also given the opportunity to stay in dormitories to get a glimpse of college life.
Upon conclusion of the workshops, the participants’ parents and friends were invited for final presentations.
Taught by Jade LeBlanc, a Southeastern theater alumna and the drama teacher at the Iberville Math, Science and Arts Academy, Zoom into Theatre students took turns directing and acting for their audience.
Zoom into Inventing students were instructed by Southeastern Assistant Professor Michael Beauvais on how to design with AutoDesk Inventor software and concluded with creating computer generated 3-D models of their designs for the audience.
Professional photographer Chuck Billiot of Mandeville taught Zoom into Photography students technical, compositional and editing techniques. At the end of the class, the students held an exhibition of their best work at Southeastern’s St. Tammany Center in Mandeville.
In partnership with Northshore Technical College, Zoom into Culinary Arts was taught by Chef Kevin Foil in Southeastern’s Consumer Science facilities. The final day of class, guests of the students were presented a full, four-course meal, served and prepared by the students.
