Southeastern announces Homecoming Contest winners

TAILGATING ENTHUSIASTS – Enthusiastic Lion fans flooded Friendship Circle with decorative tailgating on Southeastern Louisiana University’s Homecoming Day to show support and cheer on their team. The combined efforts of the Sandifer and Himber families won the Sweepstakes Award in the Homecoming Tailgating Contest. Pictured from left are Melanie Sandifer, Brie Sandifer, and Alicia Himber.


     HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University has announced the winners of its Homecoming 2011 contests, held to let the campus and community show off its Lion Pride during Homecoming Week, Oct. 31 – November 5. 
     Faculty, staff, students, tailgaters from the campus and community and downtown businesses all participated in a variety of contests challenging them to use their creative skills in decorating doors, tailgating spaces and more  – all in honor of the Homecoming theme “Roomie Takes a Road Trip.” 
     Members of the Southeastern community also put their brain power to work in the annual Phi Kappa Phi Homecoming Quiz Bowl.
     Here are the Homecoming contest results:
     Phi Kappa Phi Homecoming Quiz Bowl 
     Overall winner – The “Sigmatizers,” a faculty team of Dustin Cotton, Sherri Craig, George Dorrill, and Christoph Genre, all from the Department of English, beat the winning student team from Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. 
     Campus Door Decorating Contest – First place, Division of Extended Studies; second place, University Advancement; and third place, Office of Vice President of Student Affairs.
     Downtown Decorating Contest – Lee’s Drive-In, decorated by Alpha Omicron Pi and Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, first place; Rexall Drugs, decorated by NAACP, second place; Safari Quest, decorated by the Freshman Leadership Council faction of the Student Government Association, third place.
     Homecoming Day Tailgate Decorating Contest 
Sweepstakes Winners – Melanie and Brie Sandifer and Alicia Himber.
Most Creative Tailgate – Louis and Shirley Wiginton and fellow supporters Sonny and Marion Ruth Chandler and Jerry and Lynda Hollimon.
     Student Organization Contests:
      Sheet Sign Contest – First place, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Theta Xi; second place, Phi Mu and Delta Tau Delta; third place (tie) Kappa Sigma and Hall Council/University Housing.
     Minute to Win It – Black Student Union, first place; Gamma Beta Phi, second place, tie between University Housing and Alpha Sigma Tau for third place.
     St. Jude Letter Writing Campaign – Alpha Omicron Pi, first place; Phi Mu, second place, Alpha Sigma Tau, third place.
     Lip Sync Contest – NAACP, first place; Phi Mu and Delta Tau Delta, second place; Sigma Tau Gamma and Alpha Omicron Pi, third place.
     Float Decorating Contest – Delta Tau Delta and Phi Mu, first place; Alpha Sigma Tau, Delta Sigma Theta and Theta Chi, second place; Sigma Tau Gamma and Alpha Omicron Pi, third.
     Overall Sweepstakes winners – Phi Mu, first place, Delta Tau Delta, second place, and Alpha Omicron Pi, third place.
