HAMMOND – Local farmers and chefs will be setting up a farmer’s market in the Southeastern Louisiana University Student Union mall Monday (Oct. 24) to promote healthy eating choices with students.
The event, sponsored by the student organization Re-Connect and graduate students in environmental sociology, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will also feature cooking demonstrations with local chefs.
“Our goal is to create a network between farmers and the university,” said David Burley, assistant professor of sociology and faculty advisor for Re-Connect. “We hope this will provide direct contracts with the farmers in order to promote sustainability for the local growers.”
Re-Connect has chosen the “Real Food Challenge” as their platform for awareness on the benefits of local produce, where it comes from and to bond with students.
