HAMMOND –Southeastern Louisiana University's Department of Recreational Sports and Wellness is hosting "Scorcher Torture," a 5k run/walk, on Friday, Aug. 16, in conjunction with the Hammond Downtown Development District's Hot August Night.
Scheduled at 6 p.m., the run will begin at North Oak Park and end at Cate Square in downtown Hammond. Although runners will endure the heat of summer for 3.1 miles around Southeastern's campus, water stations will be available at every mile, and volunteers will be available to cheer runners on and help guide the way.
Megan Mast, assistant director of health and wellness, said the run/walk includes a young adult division for participants 10 to 17 and an adult division for those 18 years and older. Entry fees are $15 for active Recreational Sports and Wellness members and $20 for non-members and include a t-shirt upon registration. Proceeds from the Scorcher Torture will go to North Oak Park beautification for utilization by Southeastern students and the Hammond community.
"All young adult runners (10-17 years old) will receive a certificate of completion," she said. "First, second and third place adult females and males will receive a Rec Race Series Finisher shirt, a voucher for a free wine tasting bracelet (valued at $40) for Hot August Night, and gift cards through donations with the Southeastern Sports Management Association. Winners must be 21 and over. First place adult female and adult male finishers will win a Timex© watch, valued at $60."
Mast said there will be an awards ceremony for all placers, and refreshments will be provided for registered participants with a racing bib/number.
"After the race, we invite you to partake in the 'Lionpawlooza,' Southeastern's Lion Pride Pep Rally outside La Caretta, and then join in the fun of Hot August Night 2013."
Registration can be conducted in person at the membership desk in Recreational Sports and Wellness' Claude B. Pennington Student Activity Center, located at the corner of University Avenue and General Pershing Avenue in Hammond, at the Anytime Fitness Hammond location at 117 S.
