HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University students Matthew Anderson of Central and Meagan Payne of Denham Springs were named Outstanding Student Teachers by the College of Education at its honors convocation May 1.

Anderson was recognized for his student teaching in elementary education, while Payne was honored for her work in secondary education.

The college also recognized Thomas Bellavia, current assistant superintendent of administration for the Tangipahoa Parish School System, as its Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. A 1967 graduate with a degree in secondary education in social studies and science, he earned a master's in administration and supervision in 1970. Bellavia taught at Amite High School from 1967-1970 and then served as principal of Roseland Elementary from 1970-1987 when he moved to Amite High School, serving as principal until 1990. In 1990 he moved to the Tangipahoa Parish school system central office to serve as supervisor of secondary education and later became director of personnel. He became the assistant superintendent of administration in 2003 and continues to serve in that capacity today.

The college also announced the recipients of departmental honors, scholarships, and grants and new members of the Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Alpha honor societies and Southeastern's own Thirteen Club honor society.

The list of students receiving honors and scholarships included:

BATON ROUGE – Caitlin Tucker, Outstanding Senior in Social Studies Education; Rebecca Robicheaux, Outstanding Graduate in Elementary/Special Education.

BOURG – Heidi Matherne, Outstanding Graduate in Music Education.

CENTRAL – Matthew Anderson, Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award.

DENHAM SPRINGS – Meagan Payne, Outstanding Secondary Education Student Teacher Award.

GLOSTER, MISS. – Emily Odenwald, Outstanding Graduate in English Education.

LaPLACE – Tiffany Juneau, nominee for Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award.

MANDEVILLE – Andrea D'Aquin, Outstanding Graduate in Early Childhood Education, PK-3 and nominee for Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award.

PONCHATOULA – Rae Scarcello, Outstanding Graduate in Elementary Education.

SAINT AMANT – Skylar Laiche, nominee for Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award.

SLIDELL – Megan Larmann, Outstanding Graduate in English Education; Emily Araki, Outstanding Graduate in Middle School Education.

2) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HONORS (BATON ROUGE AREA) – Caitlin Tucker, left, of Baton Rouge and Skylar Laiche of St. Amant were recognized at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education's annual honors convocation May 1. Tucker was recognized as the Outstanding Graduate in Social Studies Education, while Laiche was a nominee for Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award.


3) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HONORS (EAST BATON ROUGE) – Rebecca Robicheaux of Baton Rouge and Matthew Anderson of Central were recognized at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education's annual honors convocation May 1. Robicheaux was recognized as the Outstanding Graduate in Elementary/Special Education, while Anderson received the Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award.


4) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HONORS (LIVINGSTON) – Meagan Payne, right, of Denham Springs was a nominee for the Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award presented at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education's annual honors convocation May 1. Congratulating her is Interim Dean Shirley Jacob.


5) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HONORS (ST. TAMMANY) – Andrea D'Aquin, left, of Mandeville was named the Outstanding Graduate in Music Education and  a nominee for the Outstanding Elementary Education Student Teacher Award presented at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education's annual honors convocation May 1. With her is Interim Dean Shirley Jacob.


6) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HONORS (TANGIPAHOA) – Rae Scarcello, left, of Ponchatoula was named the Outstanding Graduate in Elementary Education at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education's annual honors convocation May 1. With her is Interim Dean Shirley Jacob.


7) SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION HONORS (GLOSTER, MISS.) – Emily Odenwald, right, of Gloster, Miss., was recognized at the Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education's annual honors convocation May 1 with the award for Outstanding Graduate in English Education. Congratulating her is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of English Education Michelle Brown.
