HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University is offering a new Professional Development Program (PDP) for supervisors and team leaders through its Office of Non-Credit Programs.

The program was developed to meet the continuing needs of business and government and will be offered on a quarterly basis at either the Livingston Literacy and Technology Center in Walker, the Southeastern School of Nursing in Baton Rouge, or the St. Tammany Center in Mandeville, Collins said.

Track I is scheduled for Feb. 3-5, at the Southeastern School of Nursing on Essen Lane in Baton Rouge. Track II will be held Feb. 24-26, at the same location.

"This 10-module program was specifically designed to provide men and women the fundamental skill sets to be effective supervisors or team leaders," said Charlotte Lowry Collins, director of Non-Credit Programs. "Participants will be awarded two continuing education units for each track."

Track I modules include the supervisor's or team leader's role in the management process; effective communication and leadership; hazard recognition, evaluation and control; introduction to incident investigation and root cause analysis; and conducting effective safety meetings and other presentations.

Track II modules cover pre-job and pre-task planning; delivering effective on-the-job training; analyzing performance problems and conflict resolution; recognizing and dealing with the signs and symptoms of a troubled employee and the potential for workplace violence; and preventing sexual and other forms of harassment.

The course will be taught by professionals Steven P. Pereira and Steve Varnado. Pereira is an adjunct instructor in Southeastern's Bachelor of Science Program in Occupational Safety, Health and Environment. Varnado is a former Certified Safety Professional (CSP) with over 40 years of professional safety experience.

The program can also be customized to meet a particular firm's needs and delivered at off-site locations.

The class costs vary according to specified modules, as do the dates and locations of selected training. Additional class dates and locations will be added each semester. Please visit www.southeastern.edu/noncredit for updates.
