Food writer to speak at Southeastern Sims Library's "Tea with Friends"

     HAMMOND – Food enthusiast and writer, Poppy Tooker will be the featured speaker at the fifth annual “Tea with Friends” on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at Sims Library.
    Guests at this members’ tea of the Friends of Sims Library (FoSL) will enjoy a variety of teas and a selection of delectable sandwiches and pastries.
         Tooker is the host and executive producer of the weekly NPR radio show “Louisiana Eats!” and a regular food personality on WYES-TV’s weekly show “Steppin’ Out.” Her book, “The Crescent City Farmers Market Cookbook,” received a Tabasco Cookbook Award and was named “Cookbook of the Year” by “New Orleans Magazine.”
         Her other books include “Tujugue’s Cookbook: Creole Recipes and Lore in the New Orleans Grand Tradition;” “Louisiana Eats!: The People, the Food, and Their Stories;” and “Madame Begue’s Recipes of Old New Orleans Creole Cookery.”
    Tooker was recognized by the “Times Picayune” as a “Hero of the Storm” for her work reviving New Orleans restaurants and food providers following Hurricane Katrina. The International Association of Cooking Professionals recognized Tooker’s rebuilding efforts at their annual conference in April 2008 with their first ever Community Service Award.
    For over 25 years, Tooker’s cooking classes have centered on history and tradition, as well as the food science behind her preparation.
         The tea is free to members of FoSL. Non-members may reserve a seat for $25, which includes a one-year individual membership in FOSL. Unlimited mimosas will also be available for $10. Reservations must be received by Tuesday, March 1.
