HAMMOND – Overall, Southeastern Louisiana University’s campus in Hammond sustained only minimal damage due to the heavy rainstorm that passed through the region Thursday and Friday.

University officials said generally the campus appears to be in good shape with no damage or significant standing water that could threaten buildings.

The one exception is around the University Center on University Avenue and North Campus where there is more standing water than typically seen after a major rain event. This seems to be related to city drainage issues in the area, with rainwater getting into the sewage system and causing it to backup into the University Center. City crews have been working to fix the drainage problem.

Southeastern canceled classes and closed the campus yesterday through at least Friday. Saturday events such as “The Big Event” community service project and the Rotary 10-K Shamrock Run have been postponed.
