HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University Community Music School will hold its
34th annual Double Reed Workshop Jan. 26 and 27.
Scheduled at Pottle Music Building Auditorium Annex on Southeastern’s campus,
the workshop will provide help in dealing with the special requirements of the oboe
and bassoon.
The two-day workshop is $35 and is open to junior high and high school students,
as well as band directors. Beginning students are also welcome. The event begins on
Friday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. and ends on Saturday, Jan.27, at 4 p.m. Southeastern’s
Bassoon Professor Emeritus Jerry Voorhees will instruct the workshop.
“This is the 34th consecutive year we have held this workshop, and it is the
only event in our area that offers bassoon and oboe players instruction in the art
of making double reeds. The workshop staff includes oboist Everett Scott Smith from
Southeastern’s music faculty and professional oboist Christine Webert,” Voorhees said.
“Besides reedmaking we will also offer coaching in oboe and bassoon technique, help
with solo and audition material and simple repairs to instruments. There will be a
short faculty recital and a student double reed ensemble performance.”
